I think it'll be ok, in position 4, that black gets grounded, which is a path to ground of zero in theory and only a few ohms is practice. So no significant signal will go through the resistor.
Why is it such a number as 499k? Doesn't look like a standard available value.

not quite following tbat, the M pickup will probably have its cold end permanently grounded anyway. Best to make a diagram.
I see that 499k is indeed a value in the standard 1% series.

I see that 499k is indeed a value in the standard 1% series. maybe they got a good deal on precision resistors? surely (shirley) a 510k would work just fine but i'd probably use 470k because i gots a whole buncha those
