This webpage on the Stew Mac site proposes having Blend Volume Control followed by a Master Volume control. My understanding is that normally you wouldn't want to stack Volume pots because it would add enough resistance to make the tone muddy. But is that problem avoided in this particular case because the lead wires from the pickups get attached to the Middle lugs of the Blend Control pot instead of the Left lugs? i.e."independent" wiring which loads the pickups differenrly in this case?

so more resistance to ground will load the pickups less and result in a brighter signal. the issue with more pots is that their resistances to ground are in parallel which results in a lower total resistance to ground and more loading of the pickup (here's a handy calculator i have bookmarked for determining parallel resistance: www.1728.org/resistrs.htm)some folks on the bass forum don't ground the third lug of the blend pot. i do and any treble loss hasn't bothered me (i've had two basses with a blend instead of individual volume controls as it's much more useful in my opinion) one thing to keep in mind is that you will need an MN taper pot for proper blending. i know bourns makes em

thetragichero. Thanks for the helpful info about muddyness being cause by less resistance to ground, not more.
I am still curious if that general rule of thumb still holds true in this scenario since the 1st of the two volume pots here (the blend ctl) has the pickup lead wires attached to the Middle Lugs of the pot instead of the Left Lugs. Does that possibly impact things so that the Blend is NOT acting as "another pot in parallel" as you put it.

No, the Bourns M/N pots are just configured for the right taper when pickup leads are connected in the middle. I assume both M/N pot R values will always be added to the load if the extra outer lugs on each pot are grounded, as with a voltage divider (volume knob). If the extra outer lugs are not grounded, I'd think neither of the pot R values will be added to the load because they are not sent to ground, but the fully unblended pickup will be very slightly affecting the tone because it is never shorted to ground. I guess the whole blend pot thing "gets you coming and going".
