Well, I don't have a daughter, but our son plays keyboards and digs Steely Dan.

"Ah ok, you want to make money... I thought you wanted to make music." I, for one, do want to make money from my music. That is not to say that I am willing to sacrifice my music for the sake of money. Neither that my goal in life is to become overly rich from my music. I simply have an intense desire to succeed with the talents and abilities that I have been given, in order to live off of my efforts. If I can write and perform music that I, and others, enjoy, then I will consider myself a successful musician. If I can record and distribute that music and related merchandise enough to pay the bills, put food on the table, and maybe put the kids through college, then I will consider myself a successful businessman. (not to mention incredibly fortunate to be able to play music for a living and not work a 9 to 5 like i do now.) I think that too many talented musicians write off the business side of music in the name of artisitic purity, but I'm convinced that we are selling ourselves short. People (not all, but many) do enjoy good music, and are willing to pay for it. So put a business plan together, and stick to it. Write the music that you believe in and love, and then sell that music, because there will always be a market for it; you just have to find it. Use the resources you have available and make it happen.

Well i don't have children ( i am still at college ;D), but i can tell you that only a few of my college mates ever heard of bands like Alice Cooper etc.. Let alone Jazz artists, Many of them listen to crap like rap or techno, which disgusts me. Or maybe some Blink182 or Greenday . I would say that only 1/10 listen to GNR and other rock band.. 5/10 don't listen to music (or just radio stuff), and the rest (4/10) listen to rap/techno Personally i find this quite irritating, at every bloody party you hear the same stupid songs (which frankly i don't know), Krank me up some AC-DC and i sing like a bird (and one out of tune), but play % like Eminem, 50cent and others and i feel sick and as wet as a sponge in a swimming pool. The best i got in the last party i went to (after passing a comment about the music), was Bryan Adams!!! The worst thing is most girls simply don't like rock

guess what... im one of the kids. my mates listen to either punk emo rubbish like AFI and greenday, lameo repetitive rap instrumentals, or techno. I am alone when I listen to my favorite artists (jason becker, queen, led zepplin, hendrixn metallica the EAGLES) and although you may disagree with my tastes, at least they have musical credibility. be glad you grew up in a generation where the music being produced was GOOD. I never look forward to any new bands releasing any new albums, the only thing id give credit to was the RHCP new album, even so, it isnt all that great compared to their old stuff.

Im 19, and when i was/am growing up i listened to what ever was in my mom and dads CD collection.
That just happened to be stuff like ZZ top, Jimi, Extreme, Bon Jovi, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple......
Altho, as i was growing up i still listened to rap and hip hop, and still do to a curtain extent.
However, my music taste took a walk on the wild side when i was about 16/17 when i first heard SRV play Pride and Joy and Rude Mood!
From that moment on ive been hooked on blues, yeah i still listen to the 'golden oldies' and abit of rap/hip-hop but there nothing like a eric sardinas giving his resonator some blues loving!
but as all of you have said..... each to there own!

Really... what happened to music. Back in the 60s it was amazing. There was Cream, the Beatles (though I dont like them) Zeppelin, Johnny Cash, The Who, The Doors, Jethro Tull, Sabbath, ZZ Top, Hendrix and many others. In the 70s there was Derek and the Dominos, The Allman Bros, the Doobie Bros, The Who, The Clash, Tull, ZZ Top, Zeppelin, Johnny Cash , Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Miller, AC/DC Neil Young and others. Then the 80s came and were filled with Glam bands who barely pass as metal. But there was Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeth, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan, AC/DC, the Stray Cats. and others. The 90's came, thrash faded out, Vaughan died, The Who and Pink Floyd were gone. Johnny Cash was slowing down. Jethro Tull made some of their worst records. But there were a few good bands. Now... all there is is Fall Out Boy and Sum 41. Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears. Its all crap. The good music is big but not on tv (like Lamb of God and Queens of the Stone Age though they arent child friendly). Even the pop music from the 60s (which was the Beatles, Cream, Zep, Floyd etc.) and 70s was fairly enjoyable. It was my generation that really killed it all (I was born in 1990). I listen to the same music my mom listens to. She was born in the 60s. All my friends listen to that music too. At my workplace we listen to classic rock (we are supposed to listen to what college kids listen to). It really tells you something when most of the people you know listen to music that is twice their age.

alright, im a bit late on this one, but here is my input.
im only 19, so ive grown up w/ the stuff thats on the radio now. Im with unk on that 99% of it sucks. im very sad to say, that i went to a flyleaf concert, dissapointing to say the least. however, i also had the privledge to go to lollapalooza this last year. hands down the best concert i have ever been to. granted, w/ 3 days, 8 stages and 180 bands, its hard not to find somthing you liked.
i look at it like this. encourage them to listen to the stuff of today. if they are interested enough, they will look into the stuff of yesterday. i started out listening to the crap that is on the radio, but it eventually led into me listening to things like the who, zeppelin, floyd, zappa ect.(much to the excitement of my parents. it is human nature to start with the most accessable. only interest and time will bring more research into the picture and then maybe we can get the good stuff back on the radio.
