Dan, No, but that's not a bad thing to do either. If Eddy V.H. himself does that (and he does), then it can't be all bad, right? I'm speaking more to the tenet that you keep the ball of your left thumb behind the neck, approximately centered, and that you swivel your hand about that contact point in order to reach your fingerings. Done correctly, the barre chord is absolutely no sweat. But it is so natural to want to wrap the thumb around the neck, I'll agree with that! ;D When you've done it incorrectly for long enough, you eventually learn to compensate, or you compromise. If you're like me (anal), you learn to adapt. I'm real lazy until a hard chord comes along, then I'm all prim and proper..... for that moment. Then it's back to the slovenly slob I usually portray. I don't recall mentioning that I wrap my thumb around the neck ... yet you knew ... Yes, guilty as charged. I have been trying hard to correct that, but it really is so easy, isn't it? Yes, that is quite helpful - as are so many on this forum. Thank you. But I do have one request, if I may. I practiced barre chords without Finger Ease yesterday, and when I was finished I stepped on a small pebble on the floor. Sensei, If me eating crow is going to become a habit, can you use softer stuff - peas, or corn niblets or something? Dan

DanIt's the leverage thing. If your hand grips an object more closely, you can exert more strength, and with better control. The trade off is how far you can reach your fingers. Fortunately, we don't need strength to depress a string downward, but we do need some dexterity and reach to do it right, the anti-thesis of strength. Only when bending does strength play a greater part than reach, and dexterity is still good enough for the task. It's my feeling that a player who locks himself into one or the other might be cutting himself short on what he could do, if he were to practice fingerings with the left thumb in both positions. For me now, it's a natural, but there was a time when I also had to kneel at the foot of The Great One, and be smacked upside the head a few thousand times for imitating an orangutan. Don't worry, it gets easier, I swear! HTH sumgai p.s. Crow goes down quite well with a pint or two of Guinness, much better than peas or corn! ;D
