In the link
"if the color code is not posted above... "
please be aware that when the author states
"since the voltage was negative when the screwdriver was applied to the magnet (and the other coil generated a positive voltage when the screwdriver was applied to the magnet), the coil is out of phase with the first coil"
really means that the generated voltages were out of phase with each other as a function of which coil wires were connected to which inputs on the multi-meter.
This method is good for determining the proper phasing of the wires within a particular pickup, as well as between pickups.
My point, which goes to the possible confusion about what "out of phase" might really mean, is that while two coils on a pickup, or two coils on two different pickups may generate voltages per the author's test method that are IN PHASE, it does NOT indicate if the coils are wound in or out of phase with each other for hum cancellation.
His test indicates the overall phasing of the output signals for the magnet polarity, coil winding/connection direction, and lead selection for a "landing" and "departing" ferrous mass that generates a differential voltage output spike.
His test really includes the three tenants of pickup operation (hand, finger, thumb); 1. magnet polarity 2. coil winding direction 3. instantaneous string/mass direction movement.
Since he is controlling #3, the polarity of induced output voltage is dependent on #1 & #2.
FOR THE SAME POLARITY OF INDUCED DC OUTPUT VOLTAGE;
If the magnets within each coil are of opposite polarity (the magnets stick together), the coils are connected Electrically Out-Of-Phase with each other (hum canceling).
If the magnets within each coil are of the same polarity (the magnets repel when pushed together), the coils are connected Electrically IN Phase with each other (and are not hum canceling).
Since the Electrical Phase relationship of two coils from the perspective of hum susceptibility can be reversed by simply reversing the lead connections of ONE of them, regardless of magnet polarity;
MAGNET POLARITY ALONE is often the limiting factor for hum cancellation for coil combo's, since the phase of the generated output is interdependent on both the magnet polarity AND electrical phase of the coil's connections.

From greybagz,
For anyone who may require the info someday; Ibanez V7 neck pickup with 4 conductors is as follows North Coil: Red wire +, Black wire - South Coil: Green wire +, White wire -

While all of this is certainly useful information, it's important to remember that coil-winding DIRECTION must be taken into account when using single-coil pickups. This includes using two humbuckers in single-coil mode, like PRS and many others. Not paying attention to this can result in coils that are in-phase, but still hum, like the bridge and neck pickups on a Strat.

Tragic-
Hello and Welcome!
This thread has to do with wire colors of various pickups, and is a reference article. Although the topic has strayed a bit recently. . .
I can't move your post alone, only entire threads, so please re-post your questions in the general "Electronics and Wiring" area.
And you'll need to clarify matters a bit when you re-post. What guitar do you have and what exactly do you propose to do with it? What sound are you looking to achieve?
You mention splitting a coil with a push/pull pot. That's certainly doable. But I don't know what you mean by "also forcing it on . . ."

The chart near the top of the topic lists
"Anderson, Bartolini, Benedetto, DiMarzio, Gibson, Gotoh, Ibanez, Jackson, Lawrence, Peavy, Schaller, Seymour Duncan and Shadow" on top, but replaces Ibanez with Fender on the actual chart. This not only makes it more difficult (AKA: Less Easy) for me to pull the wires out of my buddie's Ibanez pups, but also puts the list out of alphabetical order.
Now, I'm pretty sure Ibanez uses a few DiMarzio pups on their high end fiddles, but...

That chart is vestigial in nature and came from somewhere some time ago. The link is not functional.
This post is sequential in nature, as folk have added info to the GeDankengang as they choose.
The only Ibanez info that I have (I have little concern about Ibanez guitars) is the information that I posted from greybagz, who (in)conveniently redefined the wires as "+" and "-" rather than start and finish.

Yeah, they don't make the most flexable guitars out there, that's for sure... Their vibrato systems are amazing, though.
I'll just rip the thing open and wire it directly to the output for him then, or something... Pfft.. Ain't my guitar haha.
Well, if I ever get around to it (it may be a while) I'll let you guys know what I find inside his guitar when I pry it open.
GAX body style. Ugly as Sin.

IronGear pickups use *almost* the same color codes as Seymour Duncan. Please note the polarity of the connections on the slug coil.

kuzi16 had linked above to a Project Guitar.com tutorial on ascertaining the color code when the pickup is of unknown provenance. That link has now left the building, and my search of the project guitar site didn't turn up the tutorial. Did anyone happen to save that link, or can find the material? It was a video if I recall correctly.
