Chris, "Scream of Tomatocaster"........ I about spewed my chips and salsa all over the cat (who's making reading the screen difficult in his own right), that was absolutely hilarious! I checked your other links, I think their procedure is a bit overly-involved, thus raising both the time-to-completion and the final cost of materials. And now that I think about it, since when is it a Trade Secret to re-hash something that has been profusely explained in public, i.e. John Atchley's original GuitarNuts site for one? As I see it, they can claim a copyright only for the presentation layout, the rest of it is simply re-stating what JohnA already said. Although the pictures aren't too bad, some folks might like them better than John's drawings. If the stuff you took jpegs of is on their site, then they'd probably appreciate us linking directly to them (support their advertising model, so to speak). Can you forward that particular email to me, off-board, and I'll see what I can do with it. sumgai

Warm- Click on ChrisK's "tranparent pickguards" link above for a view of the Tomatocaster. Sort of Andy Warhol-ish. Suitable for playing old VU tunes, I suppose . I'd rather have one painted like one of Andy's Brillo boxes. BTW, I notice StewMac couldn't resist sticking an ad for Golden Age pups in the middle of their photos of the shielding procedures. As the salesguys say: "ABC- Always Be Closing".

Thanks sumgai for finding the direct link to the StewMacStuff.
I'd originally put in info regarding the source since I'd copied and pasted it piecemeal.
A proper link is a proper link. Inherent attribution.

your welcome. After searching for a while, I located the original Quieting the Beast pdf. Should I post it here, or maybe a sticky?

This is good. As SG knows, I have about 4 or 5 of GN1 pages but mine are all saved as web pages in a defunct browser. All of mine are screen shots because I cannot figure out how to extract them from the file and I have not got around to posting them yet. If you have any more then it may save me from feeling guilty any longer!

If you want to send them to me, I can try to copy them or at least save them as pdf's.

Not sure about sending them as my email program got lost in the last reset.

gitpiddler,
most web browsers should be able to open an MHT file. If you can open it in a web browser, then you should be able to save it in a more compatible format.

The trouble is mine were saved on an unrooted android Nexus 7 tablet. I expect I can save the images, but I want to retain each whole page content as close as possible to the original. I cannot gain access to the location where the offline pages are stored on the tablet and it becomes a viscious circle. I saved lots of suitably cropped .png files but once uploaded to the kludged adfest that we know as Photobucket, it became a trial to get them into a coherent order with all the cryptic file names. I have just been forced into early retirement by factory closure so I shall have more time on my hands and I will get it together provided I am not beaten to the post!

I see the beginnings of a project here, to which perhaps bluesman, gitpeddler and b4njo can contribute. Start a thread here, in the reference section, entitled "archived GN1 pages" or some such. This would then collect all the bits we can scrounge up from the original site.
I'll leave it to any of y'all to get the ball rolling.

Thanks for taking the lead, bluesman, I stickied the other thread so it doesn't slip down. Although, so many reference threads have been stickied over the years it almost doesn't matter.

In order to "convert" to PDF, you need to install a particular kind of print driver into your OS. After that, whenever you want to print something, you can select the PDF Printer instead of your 'ink and plastic' printer, which in turn means that your program will output a file to disk that is, you guessed it, a PDF document.
My particular favorite, out of many such drivers, is PDFCreator. But as usual, YMMV.....
HTH
BTW, a hearty thank you to all who are posting such content in the other thread. I never thought to actually save any of that stuff, and when I went to look at The WayBack Machine, it seems that John Atchley disallowed any robots, and thus prevented any archiving of his stuff. Bad John, no doughnut for you!

Hi,
I have started to shield my 1986 American Standard Strat (first production year of those) using the Quieting The Beast procedure (using shielding paint), but it is not clear at all where do we attach the Second Ring Connector? Also, I noticed that many steps are missing, that is step 12, 15, 17, 19, 21, 23 and 37. Maybe the answer is somewhere in those missing steps? Thanks.

If you're referring to this PDF: www.singlecoil.com/docs/shielding_strat.pdfEach of those 'steps' is the image next to the number. Yeah, it's kinda weird to number way. But that's the way John Atchley did it. it is not clear at all where do we attach the Second Ring Connector? Refer to 'step 15' (an image) The purple arrow in Fig 2b points to where one ring terminal is sandwiched between the pot and the control cavity. It isn't visible in the image, but the pot's shaft goes through the ring terminal. Now refer to 'step 17' (an image) The purple arrow in Fig 2d points to the other ring terminal, just hanging in air. All those signal grounds get soldered to it. After that, the ring terminal and capacitor lead need to be insulated from ground. The ring terminal in Fig 2d is just a convenience for joining several wires to that end of the capacitor. It it's mechanically fastened to anything. Clear as mud?

While digging through my closet looking for an old pickguard I had I found a print-out I had made back in the day of some of the photos and info linked from the original "Quieting the Beast" HTML page. I've made a scan of these pages, in as high quality a format as I can get. It's 11 pages and comes out to about 20 MB. If you guys want this for the site you can download it from my Dropbox at this link: www.dropbox.com/s/rst49rid46kizvv/Quieting_The_Beast_Supplemental.pdf?dl=0

Thanks redshark92 I'll chat this up with the rest of the staff and we'll probably add it as another custom page or maybe append it to the existing QTB page. Btw, if you have any other stuff related to the original Guitarnuts site, you can post replies in the thread: Archived Guitar Nut Pages

Thanks, I did poke around and wasn't sure the best place to post it.
The only other thing I have is a print-out of the main Shielding the Beast article. It's the exact same content as the one you have now, except it has a white background so it may be more printer-friendly.
I can scan that up as well if you'd like to see it.
