This, in actuality has very little to do with guitars, but I just wondered if any electronics folks would know the answer.
I'm looking to move to a tiny flat for a while and have to gain space wherever I can- a lot of guitars may suffer exile here, but as I have a good set of computer speakers and my stereo- is there any sense in running my stereo without the normal speakers and plugging the computer speakers into the headphone out? The sound doing this is fine, but would there be any impedance/loading issues in running a stereo without the supplied speakers wired in?
Boring question, I know, but every inch counts here!
Cheers, Andy

Most power amps don't really like trying to drive an open speaker circuit, but with most modern stereos plugging in the headphones will disconnect the main speakers. On stereos where this doesn't happen there's usually a switch to turn the main speakers on and off independently. If yours has either of these features you'll be fine.

andy, In a transistor output stage, if there is no load, then there is no current draw. Ergo, no problem. HTH sumgai

But seriously, what in the world could you possibly be using that stereo for in this day and age? Quick convert all your vinyl and cassettes to mp3, VHS to DVD, jam a DVD drive in your computer. Get a TVR card for cable/satelite and a big monitor. Run the computer speakers out of the computer where they belong. Jettison all the dead weight you've just replaced and welcome to the 21st century.

OK... Ashcatlt- Thanks! Sumgai- Thanks! Chris K- Good Point! Ashcatlt #2- Even better point! Here I am sat typing on my word processor/home studio/cd player/dvd player/photo album/tax records folder/and so on asking for ways to save space... Sometimes you just can't see whats under your nose. At least now all I have to worry about is which basses to sell off, and whether my parents atttic is well enough insulated to protect my guitars for a year or so...

...just wait for the Elvis Costello download.. ...and add a decent set of wireless headphones, and forget about the speakers until the party you have on the day you leave the flat
