Opinions and commentary on the characteristics and qualities of guitar or bass tonewoods abound on the Internet. This is one of the better and more practical references.
The Heretic's Guide to Alternative Lutherie Woods, by John Calkin
It's a long read, and I would recommend it highly to anyone looking to build a guitar or bass.
There are so many variables in guitar construction, pickups, wiring designs, the style in which you play...etc...that giving you a definition of any particular tonewood, according to Hoyle, would just be impractical.
Long and short of it, build your guitar, have fun, measure twice, cut once and remember to put pictures up here when it's done.
