Here are the basic parts of a potentiometer: And here is a diagram of the same pot, also showing the schematic representation. Note that, in both of these, the CCW lug is numbered "1" and is to the left of the wiper when the pot is oriented so that the shaft is pointing up, and with the solder lugs pointed toward the observer. The CCW lug, or the "1" lug, will be wired to ground when the pot is used as a volume control. The CW lug, #3, will ordinarily be the "hot" input, unless one is using an alternate wiring. Note that, when we wire the pot from the back, as we often do in wiring our guitars, again with the lugs towards the observer, the lugs are in the opposite orientation, with #1 now to the right of the wiper. Since this is the way we wire things, most diagrams show the pots from the rear, in this orientation. And here are the basic ways in which pots are wired, including dual-gang pots:
