Hi, its my first post so no flames please Anyways I read about the TBX tone control that cuts bass and treble, and had the idea of doing seperate tone controls, one to cut highs and one to cut lows. Is this doable on a fender strat with just passive electronics? Obviously the low pass / high cut is easy, but haven't seen anything on doing high pass filters other than the volume control treble bleed mods.

snoop, No flames necessary, we prefer to new members to our community! Your question has been asked before, but for some reason, the search facility is ballking at finding previous threads. So after a not-so-short glance back into the archives, I found a couple of threads for you to read. Why don't you check 'em out, and tell us if we're on the right track, or if you're seeking some other solution. Use of Coil in Tone Control (like Capacitor)TBX Circuitssumgai

This shows a high and low cut structure. While this used a blend pot for high-cut or low-cut sharing a common (choice of three) capacitor, one can see that high-cut is to common and low cut is in series with the signal path. You may have to use a parallel resistor across the low-cut series pot if too much signal is attenuated at the max setting. The SPDT center off switch selects 0.047uF, 0.022uF, and about 0.015uF (the "woman tone" unk) when in the center position. Choose what you want for each control. The higher the value, the more the highs are cut and the less the lows are blocked.

... if i hear the term "woman-tone" one more time, i'm gonna SCREAM!.... ...and about 0.015uF (the "woman tone" unk) when in the center position....

lol, anyways thanks a lot for the help, see how i go. I think thats kinda what i'm after ChrisK, basically wire the tone pot straight to the volume control like my ibanez rg750 instead of via switch so its on for all pickup settings (got an spdt switch in there to bypass tone controls as well). So with two tone pots avaliable, one cuts highs, the other cuts lows.

Chris, wooooooooooooooo..........................that picksure is SHINY! i noticed they all move, except the one i'm looking at. how do they know? ...WTF is woman tone ?!.... EXACTLY! it used to mean something. (specifically the earlyCream/ Eric Clapton sound.) lots of distortion generated harmonics, but without the rough edges. maybe that what his woman at the time sounded like when.............? now people use it to describe any tone, that they think is great. and IMHO some of them are like the other woman tone. you know, the one that's used when you hear: " You never (fill in the blank) anymore!" unk

If one stares very steadily at the center (or anywhere) of one, none of them appear to move.
The effect is related to minute eye movement.

That would be the micro-saccadic eye movements, no? ;D

Man, I haven't been this excited since I stared at a Smith chart for 6 hours in college........

ux4484,
you aren't supposed to see movement in the third one.
but are you telling me, you don't see anything disconcerting about it?
Chris,
a Smith Chart?
is that one o' them thingies that sort looks like a bi-polar gravity well?

That last one is similar to a 'Mobius strip', which is a strip of paper, twisted 180 degress and joined to itself in a loop. You can make that, and you end up with a peice of paper with one side instead of two!

Ok i've done my mod, and it seems to work quite well, takes out the bass a much ess muddy on the neck pickup. I've done up a wiring diagram if anyone is interested. I also did a killswitch. Any other suggestions welcome, but i think i'm happy with it Edit: there < 1024pix wide now

snoop, Come on, man, yer killin' us here. Please, please, please, resize that image down to 1024 pixels wide, or even a bit less. We'll still get all the gory details, don't worry about that, but in the meantime, I can't even scroll my monitor far enough to the right, your current image is sooooooo large. Thanks. sumgai

What is the idea of the 100k resistor? Also, with the 5nF cap acting with the 1M bass and volume controls, I would expect the roll off of bass to be very small, at guitar frequencies.
However, what is more important is that it has been built and judged to be good. and that overrides all theory.
I could do some pSpice, but I want to know what the intentions are first.

OK, thats cool. But what you have is not quite what I had in mind, particularly with the 100k, which was intended to be a route to ground for the floating end of the bass control. Let me have a go at plagiarising Sumgais nice picture and Ill show it.
pSpice schematics are a bit confusing, since I dont didtinguish between fixed and variable resistors.
In a later thread, I got to the point of thinking that 100k wasa bit too low, and that 220k was better. But stand by while I do a diagram.

Ok, well it seems to work pretty good, all the lower bass is gone when i turn it to about 1 or 2. Probably could be more effective at taking out lower midrange perhaps if its not whats optimal

Snoop If you are happy with what you have, then that great - don't go changing it! But FYI - here is what I was talking about: people.smartchat.net.au/~l_jhewitt/circuits/snoop_tone_controls JH.gif[/IMG] And heres the pSpice - at full volume and full treble (no cut), first with full bass cut: And then with no bass cut: You can see that the switch is not included, so it would be optional Putting in a 100k instead of 220k would give a deeper maximum bass cut, with some extra reduction of high treble, when bass reaches minimum cheers John

And now we know why I called on Dr. John, the Pspice guru! Thanks, John, that cleared it up, I'm sure. Aisle 4 is looking spic and span now! ;D I needn't say more, so I sha'n't. sumgai
