Hello to all members. I'm a newbie to this forum but have been a GuitarNuts viewer for a long time and find the information and drawings always very helpful. I have a Telecaster wiring problem that I need some help with. I have a Telecaster with a Seymour Duncan APTL-3JD Jerry Donahue bridge pickup and a Seymour Duncan SP90-1 vintage soapbar in the neck position that I want to wire to a 3-way CRL switch using 2 CTS concentric pots (volume 250K and tone 500K. I tried using the wiring diagram for the '62 Jazz Bass from the Fender website but I'm not sure how to wire into the 3-way switch. If there would be an advantage to using a 4-way switch please let me know. I would really appreciate any help you could provide. P.S. I'm not good at reading schematics so at the risk of sounding overly demanding I'd prefer a drawing. Thank you. Tony

hi wpgjazzman, welcome to GuitarNuts2. the typical way a 4-way switch is used in a 2 pickup tele, is to add the both-in-series sound. a REAL bad fit for your application. with the volume controls wired "backward" as you have them in the '62 Jazz, when you turn down the volume of 1 pickup, it drastically affects the other, when the pickups are in series. the best application for adding that sound, is in a 1 volume, 1 tone, configuration. since you've gone to the effort of getting the concentric pots, it seems likely the 2 volume, 2 tone arrangement is important to you. the '62 Jazz Bass wiring has some nice advantages. most notably, if one volume is turned to minimum, it will not affect the volume of the other. (this is a parallel configuration) if you still have the '62 wiring in place, and are just looking to add the stock Tele switch to the equation, you are rounding third, and headed toward home! here's the kluge of the 2, together. instead of erasing the wires, i've indicated where wires need to be removed with red Xs. the 3 new wires are in blue, yellow and gray (or is that Grey?) cheers, unk

Well...... If you hang one pickup from the out rail and ground its pot hot terminal when selected in parallel, it will function similar to the other normally connected parallel pickup. In series, you ignore the pot hot terminals and connect the wipers together. Then each volume shunts the appropriate pickup. The tone controls still go directly across the respective pickups, and can give some really nice HF bypass sounds as well. If one looks here; guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=schem&action=display&thread=1145315219one can see the blend pot with DPDT for parallel/series. Note that if two disparate volume controls are used, a 3PDT switch is better (to directly short the wipers together). Here's one that's a little closer; guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=schem&action=display&thread=1156384780Well, it's the easiest.

ChrisK and UNKLMICKEY .... thank you all very much for your help. I really appreciate all the effort you put into my project/problem. I will use the wiring diagram '62 Jazz Bass wiring adapted to Tele'. This is the easiest for me. I'm looking forward to finishing the project tomorrow and letting you all know how it sounds.
