Hey all, I thought I would introduce myself and start right off by saying that I have read the site for a few months now and managed to re-wire two guitars with the wiring diagrams I have found on this forum. I could not have done it without the contributions you guys make. Thanks much! Now for the begging for help part I just picked up a new (well new to me) guitar body for a project I want to do. Im tired of having to tote 3-4 guitars with me to get the sounds I want for the different types of music I play. I want to build one guitar to do it all. The problem is I really dont know how to do it ;D The body is routed for HSH and I Really would like to get the most out of what parts I have here to obtain the most amount of sound variations that I can. I play a very wide range of music (jazz, blues, classic rock, metal and sometimes bluegrass) I know that I want at least a coil tap on the neck but I am not sure where to start. I have read threw this forum at great length as well as Guitar electronics and about 5-6 other sites and misc wiring diagrams and while I can grasp things like a simple coil tap, I cant work that back into the switch or grasp other things like how that and parallel/series/phase switching implements into the 5-way and other options. If that makes any sense. Here are the parts I have to work with. two audio taper 500k p/p one rotary switch one on-on-on toggle one on-on toggle one 8 lug inline style 5-way switch If I didnt make sense of anything just let me know, I will do my best to explain myself. (oh, and even though I just got this body, I am not afraid to drill or cut on it!) Thanks in advance ImNotOneOfUs

hi ImNotOneOfUs,
Welcome to GuitarNuts2.
The 5-way you're talking about will limit you the same way a stock Fender 5-way will. You should consider dumping that in favor of a superswitch. You might consider using "the Big Ugly" as a starting point. That requires 2 HBs, a superswitch, and 2 PP pots. You could use the on-on toggle (if it's a DPDT) to exchange one of the Neck pickup coils, with the SC middle. That would then turn it into the S-S-H version, and still not require any more holes than a standard strat. It would also give you a vast tonal palate to work with.
If you have your heart set on using the 8-lug switch, I'm sure one of our members with more experience using those will have some ideas for you.
cheers,
Unk

Its not so much heart but lack of funds at the moment to do better. However it sounds like your wiring idea will give me 99.9% of what I am looking for so I will have to get a superswitch, it looks like. I noticed on the second post is where you mention fixing the diagram for a single. Can you show me where the reworked diagram is? or have you done one? If not I may need one as I am not quite sure of my ability to correct from the first one. Its exactly what I was looking for with the use of the singles .
Thanks a million. That is a great setup.

warmstrat - I don't know if you've been properly welcomed... ... WELCOME! and grab a chair - the conversation here is delightful. [edit] Well, most of the time [/edit] In order to link to something (and I know there are more elegant solutions) I usually just go the page I want to link to, highlight the address from my browser, paste it into my post, highlight it and hit the link button (it looks like a globe). That's all I've got for now... guitarnuts2.proboards45.com/index.cgi?board=wiring&action=display&thread=1181730514

Not to re-highjack my own post but... I looked around on the net some more today and came across this diagram. I am not sure if my changes to it will work. I would be very appreciative if someone could look at this and see if its even in the realm of reality or not. The changes I made to it were the switches. They are supose to be with the pots as they are the switch part of the push/pull but there was no way to do it without redoing the whole thing to add those changes in. Thanks again all. Oh, and I am still going with the big ulgy once I get the extra funds this weekend to order one. This is just so I don't go crazy in the meantime

What is your goal with the switches, because I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going on.

Oooops, they I really messed up What I thought I was doing was creating a way to coil tap both HBs outer coils. I take it that isnt what I did

What is your goal with the switches, because I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going on. LSHIASMP! Of course you can't figure it out. This diagram is clueless. It seems less needy than saying "Please create a wiring diagram that will do just what I want for me", and the time was taken to assemble a drawing of some sort. But there is a lack of honesty here. Michael, if you want a project to work on, this is interesting, but don't sweat it, if you can't make everything work according to the "tone charts". If you come up with something that makes sense, and does some good things, that should be considered a success. As for me, I call shenanigans, and wash my hands of the whole thing. I'm Not One Of Us... yeah, that's an appropriate screen name for this kind of deception. My apologies to all, if I'm taking this the wrong way, but I just can't believe it's on the level. l8r, Unk

Hey look, first off I dont know where this attitude is coming from. I tried my best to figure that out on my own and if thats not good enough for you then too bad. We are not all at your skill level and sometimes need help working something out.
I just wanted to know if the switching part would work. not the rest of it, Someone one the net did that. You know, I couldn't have been that far off and if its that much of a big of a deal then forget it. But you don't need to cop and attitude with me,if your having some sort of bad day or personal crisis because I certainly didnt with you. In fact I have been nothing but polite with everyone here.
I want to cut one coil off of that diagram I found. Now there in only 6 contacts and from what I gather, there really is only 3 as its double pole. Now why in the first place it even needs another diagram beyond me. I just wanted help with that one part of it. And I supose that makes me some kind of dick for wanting to use this guitar in the meantime? Its taken me the better part of 6 months of waiting and working around bills to get all the parts to build this guitar. I'm sitting here at the home stretch and I am wondering, what is so BS about wanting to enjoy it now?
Thanks for the insult on the nick too. By the way, its the name of a band I like.
feel da love!

The first umpire says, "There are balls and there are strikes, and I call them as they are."
The second umpire says, "There are balls and there are strikes, and I call them as I see them."
The third umpire says, "There are balls and there are strikes, but they are nothing until I call them."
The moral to the story? In your case, all three umpires would call this a balk.
“But you don't need to cop and attitude with me,if your having some sort of bad day or personal crisis because I certainly didnt with you.”
You’re quick to assume that I’m having a bad day, or some sort of personal crisis. Nice misdirect, but I’m not taking the bait.
Nor am I buying the “I’m not up to your level” bit either. One look at your drawing, with connections to the throws of switches, with nothing connected to the corresponding poles, indicates that you have no clue as to how those switches function in the first place. People far below “my level” have made some decent designs, some of them stand on their own, some have been finessed into something better. Your circuit isn’t even close.
“I tried my best to figure that out on my own and if thats not good enough for you then too bad. We are not all at your skill level and sometimes need help working something out.”
The fact of the matter is, I always call a poser, a poser.
If I don’t like it, too bad? Sorry, it doesn’t work like that.
This place is inhabited by helpful people. I’m very protective of my friends here. If they’re going to invest their time helping someone, I will let them know the truth about what they’re doing. Michael is one of the up-and-coming “young guns” here. I won’t have him working feverishly trying to come up with a solution to a problem that was presented in such a disingenuous manner without pointing out the facts. If he chooses to continue to work on this, that’s perfectly fine. But he will know what and who he’s working with. There have been plenty of people who came here without a clue, and walked away with some great help. But they were honest about it, right up front. You could have made a drawing with the switches, pots, and pickups and included a wish list as to what you would like it to do. And just left the wiring blank. That would have been honest. Throw a bunch of switches pots and wires together into something senseless, and I’m gonna call it senseless, because that’s what it is. Continue to toss out B.S., and I’ll continue to call it what it is. Get used to it, because I’m not going anywhere.
Bottom line: If I don’t like it, I’ll bloody well say so.
“Its taken me the better part of 6 months of waiting and working around bills to get all the parts to build this guitar. I'm sitting here at the home stretch and I am wondering, what is so BS about wanting to enjoy it now?”
Not a damned thing… until you ask others to get involved. Then it’s a question of honesty. Remember, these people own you nothing. Ask someone for help, and be HONEST, and you’ll be likely to get it. You owe your honesty as a down-payment for their efforts. The final payment, is a thank you after they’ve invested their time and effort giving you their work for the low, low price of … free. Your problems waiting, and your desire to make this happen soon are not relevant to anyone who might help you. That isn’t their fault. Boo Hoo. But you being honest with them IS relevent. Misrepresent what you are doing, and you just look silly.
The more you continue down this path, the less seriously anyone will take you. What you do from here is, of course, your choice.
Choose wisely, and good luck.
Unk

Well dd, Im not going to go much further down that path with you because you have gone thru the trouble of insulting many more times. Still dont get the poser part. If anyone is a poser here its you. What did you get you panties in a bunch because I didn't to wait a week to order the part and another for it to come in. Or is it more that I was willing to try something other than your % diagram. Geez, you really are a piece of work you know that? your the first admin/troll I have ever seen.
Im only going to say this one more time. I asked for help, you offered it. I wasn't willing to wait 2 wks or longer so I take the time (yes time mr) to spend most of the night without sleep looking for something close that I could modify, Now since I dont know % about the switch Im a poser. Huh? I thought this place was for seeking help. I wasnt sure about what I did, I asked if " . I am not sure if my changes to it will work. I would be very appreciative if someone could look at this and see if its even in the realm of reality or not.
The changes I made to it were the switches. They are supose to be with the pots as they are the switch part of the push/pull but there was no way to do it without redoing the whole thing to add those changes in."
That my trollish friend is what I asked. Help with a switch. I didnt ask for a whole new diagram, someone else came in here and offered it. and what did I say in response? thanks you. I cant reach threw the box and make people do anything, most of all, stop what they are doing. So I did the next best thing, I thanked the man
Na, you know what, I am already tired of wasting the time trying to justify myself to an %. You have obviously made up your feeble little mind as to what and who I am. None of which you are either correct about or will ever know in the first place. But I am so glad that you think you have some second sight.
And you know what, your little 3 strikes your out thing isnt a threat, I would have to even be moved by the prospect of you kicking me out for that to mean anything to me.
I know, right now in your little orb your thinking, see he proved my point. You know what, I could suck up to your sorry % for a while, get what I want than leave. However I am more than happy to prove you wrong once again, I am simply leaving on my own accord without the help I came for. Kinda blows a hole in the so called deceptive bull % , dont it. trust me fr, lifes short, I dont have either the time nor the desire to be deceptive thats why I am ending this now. You sir are a fd.
Im sure your response will be read, not by me of course, but Im sure your not done flapping your arms and beating your chest yet. So please, by all means keep sg on people that come here for help. At the rate your going at % people over, youll be in a room by yourself within the year.
Com'on you know this is really all because I came in with a different diagram than yours!

Well now aren't you special? You can't deal with being exposed, so you throw a temper tantrum. Typical.
Three strikes and you're out threat? You have a vivid imagination if you can extrapolate that baseball analogy to any sort of threat. It must be quite amusing living with a mind like that.
There might have been a time in the past where it made any difference to me, whether someone chose one of my designs, but those days are long gone. About the only thing I have to say about you using one or my designs, is: I hope you DON'T.
First, for your sake. The big ugly is rather complicated, you obviously don't have clear thinking patterns, so it would be unfortunate for you to take on such an ambitious project.
Second, for my sake. Who know what you might end up with, so I wouldn't want the stink of what ever mess you make to reflect on my design.
"Com'on you know this is really all because I came in with a different diagram than yours!"
*LSHIASMP*
"I know, right now in your little orb your thinking, see he proved my point"
Yes, you're right about that, even if you don't know the correct word usage.
If the shoe fits...
Some might think this thread should be deleted, but I don't. I think it should be locked and stickied.
It's quite a testament to how acting like a poser, can cause one unnecessary embarrassment. It also shows how an indelicate method of exposure, can really be unkind to an unstable mind. I guess I could have been a bit more tactful, but as you say: "Life's short." (note, there is an apostrophe.)
And I'll "flap my arms, and beat my chest" until it gets locked and stickied! ROFL
Runewalker sometimes comments about the entertainment value that some people bring here, to an otherwise, quiet forum. I think he'll rate this a 5-star thread, without a doubt. No doubt he'll enjoy the baseball analogy too, even if Yogi and Casey weren't mentioned.
cheers,
Unk (aka: "fd", "dd", trollish friend.)

Well, at least I don't have to draw any diagrams on this one... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA......Very witty, sir - very, very witty. As you can tell from my stats, I'm new on the forums - and as you can tell from my POSTS, I'm starting my first project and am a complete beginner, wiring-wise. I just wanted to go on the record and say that GN2 is probably the most positively-toned forum I've come across in a long, long time. Here's a funny fact - I was actually talking with my wife the other night about my project guitar, and my quote was "I've found amazing resources on these forums I've been visiting - and I'm just blown away by how patient and nice these people are - even with my beginner/remedial questions!" just my 2c. roah

Don't give up, mr. go % yourself. You may find some useful information on how switches work in the switches section of my site. I know you know how to get there, because I drew the diagram you modified. With a little more knowledge, you'll be doing this stuff on your own.
