I have a guitar that's spent its life mostly in closets and as artwork, since I bought it from a buddy in high school. I've been piecing it together lately to build the ultimate tone monster. Having a bit of trouble.
I'm pretty sure this pickup came in this 1-slanted humbucker/1-volume guitar. It has traces of paint that is similar to the junk that was on the body. None of the other humbuckers I have in my stash are even this old.
Interesting stuff: it has a white wire and a bare wire, and it resembles all of the early PAF designs and flaws. Somebody sanded/scratched the back plate, so no positive I.D. I've talked to a few local "nuts" and it seems this could be one of the Kramer/Series 10 models similar to the ones EVH endorsed/threw out. This kid I bought it from knew a few famous musicians, and by the way the pickup is wired and works sometimes when you hit it just right, it could have been one of Edward's - lol!
Just wanna hear some thoughts from the experts here. Should I attempt to take it apart and rewire it?

Left- Whether to rewire it depends on what you want to achieve. If it's not working now, it has no vintage value, so wire away- if your goal is to learn to rewire pups or just to tinker around a bit. If you want a decent-sounding PAF, just go buy one . . .

Maybe you should save it for its vintage value (it always helps to have a good story when you sell a guitar).
Buy the pickup that you like from among the ones that give the EVH tone (I'm old, I don't know anything about this).

I got it to work, but I don't think my switching is correct. How do you wire a 2-wire pup when the diagram calls for 4-wire?
;D
The idea was to use up the crap I have laying around. So far with a Dimarzio Tone Zone (?) in the neck and this PAF, this bastardized guitar sounds KILLER. I just need to get the 2,3,4 positions worked out and try a series/parallel switch for the neck. I may still put a single coil in the middle and add a blender pot for that.
