Sorry, kind of late in the game...been working on a drum track... I know this may sound overly simple...but what about just using a bigger screw? I've take the next diameter size up, cut it to length of the old screw and saved myself hours of aggravation in the past. For what it's worth... HTC1 I was thinking that that would be too much in this instance. The holes are really close to the bottom of the tongue, and run the risk of splitting. Or am I just being too scared?

What size screw is in there now? As a rule, but not always Gospel, the neck would have had a 1/8" pilot hole with a 3/16" clearance hole in the body. You are using a plate that accepts the countersink on the screw designed for that size screw. Using a larger size screw would necessitate you enlarging that countersink as well. Rather then drag this out, check out this link for: Wood Screw Pilot Hole SizesHTC1
