JTPE- Hello and Welcome to G-Nutz2!(You've posted before and I couldn't recall whether I had properly welcomed you or not. If this is the second time, well, condider yourself doubly welcomed! Thanks for the welcome, Newey. Is "JTPE" meant as a nickname or abbreviation for my username, Jack Tripper? In that case, I'd prefer "JT" instead. Thanks!

Hi there team. Joining on as someone who has been following your thread on trebble bleed. Really impressed with the depth of knowledge and lack of ego attatched. Studying electronics (slowly) so I can do my own mods and repairs/build, with a modicum of understanding...hopefully! Currently have a damaged ESP AX-50 stripped down and doing body work, repaint and complete electronics upgrade.

Hi, everybody! This is one of the sites I refer to when I have questions. I retired from the business a decade ago, but now I have a young friend who is interested in guitar, which gives me more questions to answer, so I figured I'd join up and contribute some while I'm here. What sort of software are people using these days? We used to use mathcad and such to simulate things like "Modern vs '50s" wiring. I'm thinking now I'd just hook the stuff up and measure it with an FFT sweep. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone,
Thank you for creating such a civil and informative forum! I've spent hours learning from all of you.
I have done an experiment to figure out what causes the "buzz goes away when you touch the strings phenomenon." I'd like to post my procedure and my findings for review. Which area of the forum would be the most appropriate place for this post?

I found the thread 'Measuring Pickup Inductance In Circuit', and therefore Guitar Nuts, by accident. Very interested to see people using real science and maths on the subject of pickups. I was so pleased to see the understanding and use of series/parallel conversion as this was one of the first things I taught when I got a job as a lecturer teaching trainee transmitter engineers about radio frequency circuits back in the 1980s in the UK. Now, if I could jut remember the 3 simple formulae we used.......
After retiring a couple of years ago after nearly 40 years as an electronics engineer I've started building guitars at my new home in Tasmania and am particularly interested in pickup design and active electronics for instruments.
I'm looking forward to reading more of the forum content and hopefully becoming a useful contributor in future. Kit

kitwn- Hello and Welcome to G-Nutz2!I'm sure that therein lies a tale . . . I'm also sure that it's warmer at present there than it is here! Thank you! Depends where here is (pause to have a quick look at your profile)... OH and PA? Omaha and Pasadena at a guess. No, hang on they're cities. Ohio and Pennsylvania. Yes it is a bit warmer down here at present. Tasmania has a lovely climate which is one of the reasons for retiring here, much more temperate than the tropical end of WA where we lived and worked for the last 12 years.

Kit, Hi, and to The NutzHouse! It'll be nice to have another actual EE onboard, trust me on that one. I think you'll find that we keep the rowdy down to a manageable level, and that any bad apples seem to disappear rather quickly. IOW, we try to keep the place family friendly. And finally, I'm betting that antigua will also be glad for your contributions on the subjects of pickups and magnetics. I don't think he'll turn down any help at all. sumgai Chief Cook & Bottle Washer

Welcome kitwn! sumgai Chief Cook & Bottle Washer sumgai, where is the kitchen? We only have a coffee shop here? There’s a great Cajun restaurant near our home that features an excellent sign, over their kitchen door, that says, “Want breakfast in bed? Sleep in the kitchen.” So, after I learn where the gn2 kitchen is, if I sleep there, will you all serve me breakfast in bed too? You are the chief cook so I’m under the impression you know the answer.

Sorry, I only "cook up" circuit designs, no actual food is ever harmed while I'm in the house! And washing bottles refers to rooting out spammers and the like. Sleep wherever you please, but don't get upset when the cat pees in your shoes. HTH sumgai

don't get upset when the cat pees in your shoes. Recognize that this is just the cat's way of reminding you that you're 3 days late cleaning the litter box.

Well, as if this thread hasn't been gumbo-ed enough..... I learned that lesson a helluva long time ago. Even now, I normally clean out the box every night, and if I miss a night for whatever reason, the next morning I get the Stink Eye from both of them. One has to wonder, exactly who domesticated whom. sumgai

newey, sumbai,
Thanks for the welcome and the interesting comments, I think I'm getting a feel for the forum already 🤪 I'm not a bad cook myself, pizzas are my specialty.
Re the forum content: Since retiring I've taken more of an interest in the science (and pseudo-science) of pickups as well as how to use active electronics to best effect in a guitar. I'm always going to be better at making things than playing music so I've taken to building guitars as well and managed to get one vote (which is more than many) in the 2022 Great Guitar Build Off competition.

...so I've taken to building guitars as well and managed to get one vote (which is more than many) in the 2022 Great Guitar Build Off competition. The most remarkable thing is that your wife happily contributed. I'm impressed. I liked the tuner design. Clever touches all around, really. I also noticed you dodged all the joys of sanding the epoxy resin details. I've sanded a few fretless bass conversions with marine epoxy to limit them to one every 10 or 15 years... I missed the wood you used for the tuners and the fretboard. Help my American ears out. You're also gonna have to post something on your CNC machine. Nice shop, by the way. Oh yeah, welcome to the Nutz House. Happy Trails Cynical1

It's a very symbiotic arrangement.
Thank you for taking the time to look at the video. The wood is Huon Pine, a very slow growing and now rare timber only found in parts of Tasmania. The whole project was intended to test what I could do with the CNC whilst not spending much loot in case it didn't work out. A fun project and lots learned. There was a lot left out as I was in too much of a rush at the end to set up the camera and record any of it. The finish isn't actually very good but television can hide a multitude of sins.

Wait a minute, did I miss a link to a video about this guitar somewhere? No, you didn't miss anything. I wasn't feeling pretentious enough to expect everyone to run off and watch my videos but cynical1 obviously did a Columbo impersonation and found my Kitwn channel on YT. The final entry video linked below has most of what you might want. There are some more details in some of the earlier stuff.
I had to interrupt the build for a quite a while and then the catch-up phase was very rushed so there are some bit's that are missing from the videos. It's now wired as a non-active guitar with four 500K pots instead of the planned five. The circuit includes a bass-cut control similar to Leo Fender's later G&L guitars but with a downstream master volume to provide a known parallel resistance to make the bass-cut work as predicted. The other two are a conventional treble-cut and a variable series resistance on the neck PU to allow a difference in lead/rhythm volumes or a blend control when both are selected.

You learn something new everyday. I admit, you guys have some very interesting species down there. Keep the secret, or it'll be gone. Actually, I found you on the Great Guitar Build-Off website. The picture in your avatar looks just like the one in your project... Watson would not have written this one down... Yeah, I was bad before I retired...but I'm worse now that I've retired...or at least stopped worrying about what I was going to do when I grew up... I've been watching the Guitar Build Off video for a while. I'm also a big fan of Ben Crowe and Crimson Guitars. If I owned a fast car I could knock off liquor stores until I accumulated the coin to take one of his classes... It's too bad you weren't here about 10 years ago. We had a member on Phillip Island who built his own sustainers and preamps. Yeah, hard finishes are an art form unto themselves. I'll hold the diatribe for now... So, what's next on the bench? HTC1

I get the bit about 'stop worrying about what I'm going to do when I grow up'. I just didn't bother growing up. That avatar dates back to about 1978. I had a Ted Nugent album with a picture of him looking remarkably similar at the time. Not that I'm a fan of Ted, I never bought anything else of his.
Next on the bench? I want to make an acoustic parlour guitar, my first acoustic attempt. The CNC will help with the jigs and clamps for that. I'm also toying with a solid electric design which allows quick and easy swapping of pickups and electrics for experimental purposes. Plenty of other things need doing as well this year so don't hold your breath. And as for something completely different: I also used the CNC to make a wooden clock which, by the use of subtle magic, is as accurate as a quartz watch. A bigger, hardwood version is on the way for an exhibition later this year.

P.S. Dear Moderator, do you want me move this 'chatting with Kit' series onto a new thread? No need, if we're just "shootin' it" this is as good a place as any. But if we start getting into a specific project, a new thread will get more eyeballs elsewhere. Wiring issues, diagrams, etc go in the "Guitar Wiring" sub-board, if it's more about building, woodworking, etc. the Lutherie section is the place to put it.

This is the "intro" thread where only a modicum is exposed for public consumption, and all that's gone on recently is still only the tip of the iceberg, as it were. As with newey, I fully expect that there will be new threads galore, over the coming year and years. sumgai

Thanks for the warm welcome! I'm determined to expand my horizons. Fairly comfortable with building, setups and repairs. Genuinely want to learn and eventually how to design my own circuits. I've spent a ton of time digging through old threads but still feel like i'm missing some fundamentals. Any reading suggestions? Think I will post a new thread this week about JohnH's Rev A as I continue to TRY and make it work on a Parker P38 with piezo preamp.
