Iām going to guess that the lack of numbers displayed on a digital multimeter, when checking continuity between volume pot and black āpaintā, means that that connection lacks continuity. Going to buy a new washer and some tiny screws and try your idea, thetragichero.

the resistance of air is in the 10^16 range according to some googlefu
i generally use screws/etc lying around the house for this kinda thing. just make sure it's not long or it will come out the other side of the guitar

hmmm, um, after buying the shortest sheet metal screws that Home Depot had (theyāre 3/8 inch), it turns out that I only have about 4mm of space to drive a screw. So I donāt think screwing into the bottom of the cavity is possible. Would screwing the large washer into a wall be just as good? (The washer is large bc it occurred to me that a larger ground surface would touch more of the black āpaintā.) The washer is big enough that most of it will not be touching the black āpaintā on the wall, but the bottom will. And the wall next to the volume pot, shown in the ^picture, is a blessing; itās perfectly flat! thetragichero, would screwing the washer into that wall be just as good? edit: Actually, I think that 4mm isnāt wood, but maybe itās the same type of material as the outside of the guitar... the switch is in a 4mm deep cavity so thatās why I thought there was 4mm of wood; I bet the entire bottom isnāt wood. So hopefully the wall will be a good place to screw the washer in... I donāt know. š¤·āāļø

yeah the sheilding doesn't care which part of it you connect to ground ;-) wall is a good spot, as that leaves little room for colorful language as the screw comes through the lovely paint on the back of the guitar and into the dining room table

Ok, thetragichero, thank you so much! Your washer idea works wonderfully; the hum is much-quieter/gone. Though, now only the neck pickup can be heard again (when the switch is to the left position) so there is a short somewhere. Hmm... this digital multimeter will be useful! I need to not press the probes so hard against the black āpaintā; Iāve made some tiny scratches, in it, as a result.

YEAY! After testing some of the wires with my multimeter, there was about 1/2ā of bare untined ground wire that was soldered by the guitar maker into one side of the switch. The wire looked old and when testing for continuity on spots on that half inch of wire, the multimeter never gave a solid never-ending beep... so after a few uses of my wire strippers, the new soft wire showed itself and I tinned it and soldered the end onto the same-side of the switch... and now both pickups work AND there is no hum! PRAISE GOD!! Thank you all so much for all of the much needed help and guidance! So happy this forum was chosen for my questions! p.s. Most of the new soft wire is tinned; the 2mm closest to the wire covering isnāt tinned... does that matter? Should I go back and tin that small wire part? (I didnāt want to melt the wire covering that was inside the wrapped ground wire.) Itās bent, but could be unbent, I guess, and tinned... what do you recommend? edit: the new soft tinned wire is definitely not 1/2ā

should be fine. methinks if you try to tin the wire close to the covering, you'll end up with more untinned wire as you melt the covering
