I had an Ibanez Blazer in the 80's. It had the standard 3 single coil pups. It was the time of Van Halen, so I ripped it all out and had one Dimarzio humbucker, and one volume knob. I was discussing this with my friend at work, I explained to him that since it was stripped down to bare essentials without any tone pots etc. in between, that the signal to the amp would be stronger... [glow=red,2,300]Is there any truth to this?[/glow]

deepblue - Yes it is true, and most definitely true if that provides you with lunch. A standard tone control bleeds a little of the high frequencies even when set to minimum cut. Whether you can hear it depends on a few factors, but certainly the theory is true. There are 'no-load' tone pots that disconnect fully at minimum cut, giving you back that small extra edge. You can make one yourself by opening a pot and cutting the track at one end. However, the concept of one great sounding pickup and just a volume control is nice, and excellent therapy. I think it would be a very good design exercise for Sumgai and UnklMikey. I'd either like to see two completely different versions, or one version that they both agree on! cheers John

I'm new to this site and have wondered if there is any rewiring that is posted to this site that deals with the noiseless pickups from Fender. I bought an American Deluxe Strat equiped with noiseless pickups and am interested in doing the "Strat Lovers" mod to it, but am concerned that it only applies to the single coil PU's only. Can you advise?

...... However, the concept of one great sounding pickup and just a volume control is nice, and excellent therapy. I think it would be a very good design exercise for Sumgai and UnklMikey. I'd either like to see two completely different versions, or one version that they both agree on! Errr, I think there's a joke in there somewhere right? ;D Actually, in my most recent incarnation, I put the vol and tone pots back in. But that was to plug up the holes more than anything else, I didn't have a spare blank scratchplate laying about at that moment...... Like most everyone else here, I have yet to move to the Active side of the force, I'm still passive. Removing the vol and tone pots altogether did make a noticible difference in the overall tone of every pup combo. More sizzle, I'd say. The next big work-bench-binge will be to add a pre-amp, so the controls may come back, or they may stay gone. I do have a floor pedal for overall volume anyway (it's active), and I can adjust the tone on the floor boxes or at the amp rapidly when needed, so that particular control is of small value to me. sumgai

sumgai: just use both worlds - you surely have more than one guitar activate one, let the others be passive

df, No, hard as it may be to believe, I found long ago that I have a curious limitation - I can not play more than one guitar at a time! From that moment onwards, I have never felt the desire to own more than one ax. Amplifiers, however, that's a different matter..... You can always run more cords to more amps! ;D sumgai
