Pursuant to a recent video posted by davidofchatham featuring Jim Lill and his quest for "Where does the Tone Come From in a Guitar Amplifier?", I've come across an update to that query. Try this on for size: Here we see someone who says essentially the same thing I've been saying (off and on) over the years, about trying to compare one sound to another when they come from different sources, and when they're recorded with different tools, and when they're transmitted via different media. (And here I'm speaking to both direct recordings like tape or cd, and the internet in general, including YouTube in particular.) I think you'll like his methodologies, even if at times he's pretty terse. For the curious, he's posted a considerable number of videos supporting his contentions, but sadly they aren't linked in the description. For those, you'll have to visit his channel. HTH

I really like Jim's videos. He has such a practical, try it and see approach and I like his quick-fire, stick to the subject presentation. His point in this video is a good one. There isn't anybody in the world under the age of about 70 who has actually heard what Jimmi Hendrix heard when he stood on stage and played guitar.

It's funny, but when I started there was no recording what we did. Well, not in the classic sense...it was more TASCAM and pray alot...
I played Hell chasing a good recorded tone.

I don't know any tune named Hell. Could you hum a few bars, and maybe I could fake it..... (Sorry, old joke.)

I played Hell chasing a good recorded tone Playing hell? I thought it was "paying hell", as in "there'll be hell to pay . . ." Or are we mixing metaphors for fun (but not profit)? "Playing hell" was the Blues Bros. doing their standard R&B set in a C&W bar . . .complete with chicken wire . . .

Playing hell? I thought it was "paying hell" word·play: (ˈwərd-ˌplā) noun; the witty exploitation of the meanings and ambiguities of words, especially in puns. "so many of the jokes are based on wordplay"

Off the rails, over the side of the trestle, and plunging, locomotive first, into the cataract . . .

His speaker cab video was a real eye-opener. Surprising how much difference cab size makes, and how good the styrofoam cab sounded. I figure the guitar's proximity to the cab only matters if you want some level of feedback.
The sound comparisons in a few of his videos are too short to be able to tell how a guitar or amp responds dynamically, but his commitment to his projects is outstanding.

Thanks for sharing and the tag, sumgai! I think Jim Lill is getting snarkier as he goes, but I can certainly understand why. This series has been very eye-opening (ear-opening?) for me! And he's funny to boot.

David, Jim is indeed letting his disdain for Marketing Speak come out, little by little. IMO, letting marketers know that they've traveled "one adjective too far" is a good thing, provided that one doesn't become offensive about it. I think Jim gets the job done on that score. Some of his analytic methods are a mite too simple for my tastes, but in the end, he stays at the level of a working musician, which is exactly what those musicians will most easily understand and appreciate. If he were a member here, I'd award him several Karma points. HTH sumgai
