I consider myself super-duper lucky to have found a jam night in which most songs are composed on the spot.
Rhythms are chosen at whim and will and yes, more often than not, it leaves everyone else scrambling to ask and answer the question, "Okay. What key?" until someone gives up refusing to pick a key (don't ask for logical explanation of the process, 'cause I don't think there is one, but it works! )
While this discovery is fairly recent in my aged years, I have often pondered over the decades what it would take to inspire a group of musicians at a jam night to just start playing something from scratch. Even a moment of forgetting to play a song "just like the record" and instead see what variations develop as each musician puts their own spin on the composition.
I am curious about what people think about an improvisational jam night versus a more traditional performance of songs known to the musicians performing together...?

I for one absolutely hate to “jam”. It’s either one dude spazzing all over never repeating anything so nobody has any chance to catch on or just devolves into Em blues which can be fun for a couple cycles but gets old quick.
