I am trying to do the guitar nuts shielding and it suggests a .33uf 400 volt capacitor for shock protection. Are caps bi directional and if not which end do you soilder to the star ground ! Thanks Brian

Some are, some aren't. Its mostly the big electrolytic "can" shaped caps that require proper polarity. Most of the time the leads will have a + and - side clearly depicted, or sometimes an arrow showing the direction of conventional current flow. If the cap is lacking these types of indicators, then polarity will not matter.
Fake Edit: Forgot one more. Sometimes a tubular type capacitor will have a ring around one end. That indicates the negative side of the cap.

You should use a non-polarised bi-polar cap. These would be film and not electrolytic.
Unless it's an old style of wax/paper/foil cap where the black printed ring indicates the outside foil layer for shielding purposes (not that it ever made a huge difference).
If the cap has a plastic covering but either end shows a metal can inside, it's an electrolytic and should not be used for this purpose.
One of this board's members had procured a number of these caps awhile back and was selling them at cost to members. I'll PM him and ask if he still has some.

dent, Hi, and welcome to the NutzHouse! ;D Where you'll really go nutty when I say unto you - yes, that capacitor will work, but at $8.50 USD, that's at least $7.50 USD more than you should've spent. I suggest two courses of action for you, post haste - cancel that order, and await ChrisK's notice to Cheshirecat. When that worthy comes online, I'm sure he'll mail you one of his units (albeit a different shape) for about a buck, give or take 50¢:. I have one of them in front of me, as we speak (type/read). It's a bit bigger than some caps, but again, the price is right! Would I part with it? Oh sure, but let's let the original entrepeneur have first dibs at it, shall we? Hang tight, help's on the way! ;D sumgai

Yes I was aware that the price was high (= another $6 for shipping LOL ) but it is on the way too late to cancel. But back to the original question which color lead goes where???
thanks

Brian, What you are seeing aren't color-coded leads, they're simply pieces of insulation that happen to be colored differently. Why? I dunno! Put the capacitor into the circuit in any way you wish, so long as the two leads connect to something (but preferably the correct junctions). Orient it physically so as to look pretty, or whatever your heart desires. HTH sumgai

It's not commercial fraud, it's just MARKETING! If anyone has a question regarding electronic components, we'll help. We may bicker amongst ourselves whilst doing so, and even rant and /rant aboot them there "purloining purveyors of poof" as we feel led, but we will help. (You may have to put up with the use of words such as " amongst/whilst" from those in the former (na na na na na na!) British colonies who think that these are cute words, and "aboot and ya betcha" from those that think they talk funny west of Pennsylvania. We know that we're dang smart, unfortunately we also think that we're funny.) We'll give honest answers because we're too dumb/lazy to charge for the help, and we have no commercial interest (right, guys?) in what we recommend.

............... We'll give honest answers because we're too dumb/lazy to charge for the help, and we have no commercial interest (right, guys?) in what we recommend. Hey, I was gonna offer my cap for 95¢, if'n Cheshirecat didn't jump in here soon! Of course, there'd've been a slight fee for profitshipping and handling, but how's a fella supposed to earn even that pittance, when you guys from the western hemisphere of the third stone from the sun are making like Richard Stallman run amok. This ain't no Open Source parts industry, ya know! ....... ;D sumgai

Well the cap worked. I finished the shielding and the guitar sounds great and it has almost no hum at all!
