I was told this is a no no!...When I change my strings, I take them all off and replace them starting from low E to high E. That way I can wipe down and oil my neck. Is this wrong?...Too much tension/non tension on the neck? I have been doing this for years. I feel shame!

if you have a tuna-matic, it's easy to accidentally spin the height adjusters.
if you have extra heavy gauge strings, and you leave them off for a long time, the tension on the truss rod will start to bend your neck backwards.
otherwise, i don't know of a problem.

If you have a Floyd, it can be hard on the knife edge -UNLESS- you block the bridge up with something like a AA battery or a couple pop-bottle caps underneath the fine tuners and against the body. But no, freeing up your neck for a bit of forward-thinking preventative maintenance is not wrong at all.

Ah. Wow. I've had saddle pieces crack, but not a plate (if I understand you right). Was that an original Floyd? If so, it's VERY weird that a bridge plate broke - they're not cast on OFRs. I have seen this on Ibanez Edges, though. In any case, I'm not convinced it was because there weren't strings on it. That adds some stress to the bridge, but shouldn't be anywhere near enough to damage it like that.
