I have a quick and easy question. I'm making a custom pickguard for my Strat copy, to hold two full-sized humbuckers. The pickups came with black plastic mounting rings, the same color as the new pickguard. The question is, are these used on a pickguard, or are they only for guitars in which they are mounted directly on the wood? The guitar is all apart now, without even a bridge, so I can't easily check for clearance under the strings.

The new mounting rings included with your shiny new buckers are courtesy for in case you have a guitar without a front rout. Don't throw them away, they might be useful later, but they shouldn't be used on your Strat's pickguard. The 'buckers should just rest on their springs/screws through mounting holes on either side of your pickguard's pickup holes.

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought that they should be mounted directly, but wasn't sure. Now I'll have to be extra careful making the openings, since they won't be hidden by the ring. Drat.
