I know that 90% of strings snap at the bridge. (thats what I've heard) And I'm used to seeing it (the tune-o-matic bridge is notorious for this) but recently I've had alot of strings snap at the tuners. 9 times out of 10 my strings break way up at the tuners. Is the caused by my crappy d'addario strings or am I doing something wrong? Is it the extra amount of tension on the thicker strings?
I use D'Addario XL Strings .013-.056. Should I start using 10-46 instead of 13-56? Right now Im out of a high E so I'm begining to think that its the extra tension.

try locking tuners. they are cruel to the strings in a different way. locking tuners are very practical anyway, will put them on all my guitars eventually.

I'm not sure what type of tuner I need. I know tuners come with different hole sizes. How can I tell (without removing my tuners) what kind I need?

you can't, really. the easiest way is to buy 10mm tuners and if the holes in your guitar are 8mm just mill them to 10mm.

sorry, late reply.
You can try sanding your tuner's hole with a 500-1000 grit sandpaper.
(the exact same fix for the string-breakage-at-the-bridge problem).
