While cleaning out an old parts bin, I came across this pickup that I have owned forever. I have never been able to identify it, and it's fast approaching it's 50th birthday. Naturally, the pic is of it's underside with a simple ink stamp of the date of manufacture. SEP 13 1956 The top side is just a plain chrome cover and the brass rivets go clear through holding it all together. Any ideas?

'bastard, Got me by the short ones. From the construction of the date, month-day-year, I'd say that it is an American item. However, that bit about the brass rivets throws me off - not too many USA factories did that. I might guess Rickenbacker? Does the pup work at all? sumgai

Hey Sum, The pickup worked the last time I tried it, but that was maybe 20 years ago. I stuck it between the sound hole and the bridge of my Dano Convertible and man did it sound horrible, even for jazz or lap steel. It's all bass with no articulation whatsoever with an extremely low output. Oh, and when about did the abrieviation 'pup' come about? I'm starting to get back into playing / repairing after an involuntary 15 year hiatus (no, not jail but family related issues), and everything seems to be the same to me except the word pup. Cute. Reminder: These caluses on my fingertips are good things. Don't bite them off!

tb, Ya know, I don't recall seeing 'pup' before I started hanging out here on GN2....... Like you, I'm late to the party, and they won't tell me where the keg is! If the thing doesn't sound good, then either keep it for a "conversation piece", or else dissect it for the knowledge, knowing that it probably won't survive the surgery. sumgai

So, it's not the holy grail where I would be able to live off the interest from what I sold it for on eBay? Bummer!     LOL! Thanks for looking, Sum. Back in the parts bin it goes, for another 50 years...

tb, That's the ticket...... make your inheritors figure it out!! They'll be scratching their heads so hard, wondering WTF, they'll need Rogaine before they're done! ;D
