Hi everyone, A few questions. I've just recently acquired an early Charvel (by Jackson). The previous owner I presume has, (by what it looks like) gone to town with the soldering iron and attempted to modify its wiring. I've begun to clean it up as it is a little noisy and I hate messy wiring. It has a Seymour Duncan Hot Rails in the neck (very hot), a Jackson J-100 single coil in the middle and an early Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates in the bridge (2 wire, but now 4 wire, as it has been tapped by someone, seems to be intact and working OK). And a 5 way selector switch. Now my questions are, 1) The J-100 single coil has a black and a white wire, general practice tells me that the black is usually ground, but in this guitar the black wire has been connected to selector switch and white to ground, is this right? 2) The Hot Rails pickup has a 4 wire shielded conductor, now the shielding of this cable is poking out of cable at pickup end, but soldered to back of pot at other (general practice again, one end of shield connected to ground, thus not causing a ground loop, right?) The worry is, I've not seen a shield hanging out at pickup end before (usually cut away). Is this OK to cut away? Or does it belong somewhere. 3) And finally, the Pearly Gates which has been aftermarketly tapped (is that a word? aftermarketly? ) has had its 4 wires shielded by what looks like a homemade shield (looks similar to the insulation and copper braid inside game controller leads, just without the controller conductors. I've had to repair my PS2 controller a couple of times, temper temper. ) Anyhow, it too is only grounded at back of the pot, is this OK? I know it would probably be better to purchase some 4 conductor shielded guitar wire. But it is ever so hard to get it here in Oz. Thanks for reading. Look forward to your replies. I'll ask about pickup configuration suggestions later.

Thanks for reading. Look forward to your replies. I'll ask about pickup configuration suggestions later. greybagz, FYI - editing does not create a new post, and does nothing to draw attention to your recent activity with respect to this post. I have taken the liberty of copying the bottom lines of your post (I am guessing that is what you added earlier this morning?) to hopefully draw the attention of those that can help you. Dan

to answer your questions (to the best of my knowledge): 1. Black is usually ground is the other wire is red, but with black/white wiring, the white is ground and the black is hot. So... your guitar seems to wired correctly in that respect. 2. To confirm, the grounding of one end is correct, and you should have no problems of you trim it back at the pup end. 3. Without a pic I can't be 100% sure, but what you describe seems ok to me. As for 4 conductor pup wire, it's often not called that, but I found an aussie dealer of belden wire, who sells a 4 conductor microphone wire with sheild that would work perfectly: www.maser.com.au/au/products-cable-audiovideo.htmHope it helps

Hey Guys, Dan, thank you for your note
It was the thread topic I changed "Charvel Pickup Questions", originally had "Charvel Project" I am very new to forum writing and was reading thru some reference topics the other day and found that it's better to be specific for a particular forum ie:"pickup question, not just project" (electronics and wiring). I thought that this may have been a reason for little views. All other lines remained unchanged. Thankyou for your advice though.
Michaelcbell, Thanks for the link and for your advice, it is much appreciated. Graeme

Huh? Pickups says "Use this place to describe and compare the tonality of different pickups you've experienced." Electronics says "Discuss wiring and electronics here, post ideas and ask questions." Given the nature of his questions, I think greybagz was in the right place ... wasn't he? Dan

Dan, No, my fine feathered friend, you're reading the descripton a bit narrowly, tonality is only one aspect of a pickup, to be sure. And the 'ideas and questions' part of electronics was aimed at circuitry, not individual components that already have their own forums. (Although I admit that talking about "grounding to the back of the pot" is probably what got you to thinking that Electronics was the right place, but that question was ancillary to the main thrust, the pickup itself.) What you pointed out is that I need to re-phrase the descriptions. More to the point, I probably need to reorganize the whole Forum, in order to make it easier for a new person to find their way around. johan has given me some good ideas, do you have any gasoline you'd like to throw onto the fire? ;D Anybody else, got any suggestions that you think would help make the Forum easier to navigate and find stuff? In fact, now that I think about it, that'd be taking this thread off-topic. Let's make those suggestions in this new topic here: Re-org the Forum?sumgai

Wow, I had no idea I could create a hot topic. I find the current forum layout is quite ok and easy to follow. And you both have valid points about the where abouts of my topic. I have started to put the bits back where they go, and will be posting a thread regarding some wiring options and any ideas anyone may have. (In the Electronics and Wiring section of course ) Thanks guys. Graeme
