? as far as I know, it's just a Strat with some Dimarzio stacks.

It is the BEST Strat that Fender makes right now, hands down. It's got a '57 style body (meaning it's routed for 3 single-coils under the pickguard rather than a pool route or 2 hums and 1 single), 12" radius fingerboard, quartersawn neck, thin nitro finish on the body. Plays like a dream and smooth......OMG is it smooth. The pickups are custom wound Fenders, not DiMarzio stacks (sorry, bam). This Strat truly has the best of vintage and best of modern features. Erik's details are correct, but I'd argue on the "best" thing. It's definitely high line, and maybe "best" for a vintage fan, but that's not everyone. As an example, I prefer a harder poly finish for durability and H-S-H routing for flexibility. Others might prefer the 7.5" radius, etc.

I could not disagree more about wanting a 'poly' finish. I have a couple of both solid body's and semi hollow body guitars with a production guitar poly finish as well as several guitars that have a nitro-cellulose finish and the difference in sound is definitely noticeable! One Valley Arts strat that I have with a Nitro-C finish is by far the best sounding guitar of the bunch - particularly on cleaner amp settings where the tone is revealed more. The sacrifice in durability is way worth it for the tone. Just my .02¢

Well, I tried one a couple of days ago. That example (in GC) was just OK, not great. So, like always, try several and buy the best.
I'd bought an AmDlxSSS SCN S-1 2004 Anniversary Strat that was spectacular (to me). Great tone, and gasp, a great setup. The fact that other's didn't like it and GC had it for $899 during the last Memorial day sale didn't hurt either. (I passed on a Am SSS 2004 Anniversary Strat because that particular one was pedestrian at best.) And, I already had a rosewood neck AmDlxSSS SCN S-1 Strat.
Good guitars are situational in nature. (It's just luck, as in when preparation meets opportunity, ya gots to "play" to win.) I'll be trying more of the "Erics".
If you see a great one (anyone), buy it. With most 30 day return policies, it only costs a point or two in "float" on yer card if you don't like it (at home, where all new toys should be tested). (Always use a card, store credit is the "gift" that keeps on sucking.)

I toyed with the Eric Johnson, and wasn't that impressed. I was much more impressed with the Clapton. Now THAT'S a keeper, and I HATE strats with a passion!!

I read an article today from one of the people who helped Eric put together his Strat. He said Eric was a nice guy but a real pain in the butt! He even took various types of fretwire and dropped them on a cement floor to see which one had the most melodic "ping" on impact.

Jester, my kinsman! Finally another H-S-H'er! =D You just CAN'T beat the flexibility. On that score, I have a double barrel switching setup, AND a coil split switch. Something like 17 sounds from my baby. And many of them are even pretty good... And with all that, it's still easy to get around. ...but I'm thinking of adding more flexibilty yet...

Maybe something makes a theoretical difference, or a slight difference that goes unheard in a CD mix or band context, but players jump all over it. I'd LOVE to know if Eric really heard differences. I mean, I know he "perceived" them, or he wouldn't go to the lengths he did. But I mean could he hear battery & fret differences in ABX tests? Not that it would matter to 99% of his listeners even if he could, but it would be amazing if he had that kind of auditory acuity. Then one would wonder why God saw fit to take such a nice guy and great player and curse him in that way...

Yes, they say he can hear a dying battery or even tell the type of battery being used. My word that would drive me nuts! Ill bet when his wife eats high fibre foods she stays a great distance away from ol' Eric!....he could even hear the silent ones!
