Here's what this thread is all about. Somebody posts a TAB, the first person to guess what song this is the main riff, hook, or easily recognizable part to wins.
The catch: you don't know the rhythm!
If you guess correctly, you get...um...nothing really, but you get to post the next TAB!!!!
Here's the first one. For ease sake, think of a band that rhymes with Ed Feppelin.
------------ ------------ ---------2 -----2-4-2 -3-4-----0 ------------
Oh, and make sure you include the tuning it's in, if it's not standard. This particular song is recorded in standard tuning, down 1/2 step!
Good luck guitar nuts!

alright, off the top of my head, there is a part in Tangerine that could fit the riff. also, houses of the holy.

A little slower, one might make a case for Black Dog, but anything slower than that, I'm not hip to it. sumgai

ap, Holy Surfboards, Batman, that's an Em9! It doesn't occur naturally anywhere in the entire rock pantheon, except as the ending chord of Pipeline. blank, you wouldn't be an old-school intrumental player perchance, eh? sumgai

ap, If I did insert a joke there, it'd have to be shorter than this very message so that surfers could understand it! ;D And yes, since SRV did once play Pipeline (with Dick Dale), I'll let him have a free pass into Hall of Freaky Chords. sumgai

ok , but i still dont get the bit about oldschool instrumental player. i'm a 16 year old kid from arkansas who likes SRV and Skynyrd and Creedence. ..... does that count?

Post by sumgai on Aug 31, 2007 4:21:16 GMT -5
pickerdeuce, No, that doesn't count. I'm referring to those who like to play tunes that have no words, that kind of thing. The old-school part is simple - I'm about44 years further along the path than you are. When I grew up, instrumentals were a large part of what we heard on the radio, or bought at record stores (this would be before CD's were invented). Budding guitarists blew spent all their time listening to, and learning from, these tunes. Many are still popular today, although not as much as back then. The Em9 thing being from 'Pipeline' is no longer a widely-known factoid. If you're into SRV, I'll assume you've got a copy of his version of Pipeline..... check out the ending chord. HTH sumgai

I too am a big fan of the instrumental. The Ventures, Dick Dale etc. The song "Walk dont run" gets cranked major when I hear it on the ol radio.
SRV has some great ones too...Scuttle Buttin, Rude Mood to name a few.
You dont need lyrics all the time. Just a nice tune with a cool hook and im in heaven!

ok dont get your pants in a wad sumgai ( bad smiley) most of the songs that i know how to play of SRV are instrumental even if im not oldschool. and no, i dont have any of his tab books or material because i taught myself by listening to him and by watching other people copy him. (also thank god for the internet for tabs, youtube, etc.)( take into consideration though, that i dont have a job, i am homeschooled, and most of the time i dont sound ANYTHING like SRV. ) ( but then who does?) anywhoo, would somebody post a tab so's i can try to figger it out?
