ap, My panties are so bunched up that people sometimes mistake me for Angus Young! Makes me wanna laugh along with 'em...... Like deep says, sometimes a guy don't need no words to make beautiful music. SRV got there too, your examples are highlights of his career, in my book. The fact is, I had already been playing for awhile when The Ventures hit the scene (right in my backyard), and then it was Dick Dale and the surf craze, and if you had any couth at all, you got your hands on Chet Atkins, and then cut your hands off at the wrist, 'cause you knew there was just no way a human could do that stuff...... In more recent times, punk band Agent Orange re-popularized several old surf hits, check 'em out. And of course, Pulp Fiction was a big influence on Dick Dale coming back to the forefront of the instrumental market. (He no longer performs what we call "surf", his music is more Amerind oriented now. But oh Lowerd, can that boy still rock it out!!) In short, listen to other players outside of the Blues field. SRV is tops, but he's not the only toy in the box. Hell, look up Joe Satriani, he's got some chops that'll curdle your dog's hair, let alone yours. ;D And of course, there's always YouTube, with the infamous Michael Angelo Batio videos. Check out "Speed Kills"........... but take your Dramamine first, it's a dizzying experience. HTH sumgai

is that even possible for a human to play without seeing some indication of how long each note is supposed to be?

Ok, the bold notes get held for a bit longer. Especially the C and G notes.
The rest is pretty straight-forward.
Once you get it fluid, you'll know the song.
