I just watched the movie Crossroads again. Correct me if im wrong, but didnt Ry Cooder play the bluesy Telecaster parts, and Vai played all the flash bits? The Karate kid got on my nerves!

deep, No, that was Arlen Roth.
The story goes like this: Vai was brought in to teach Maccio how to play the pieces for the film. He shows up for the gig, the producer takes one look at him, and right on the spot, casts Vai as Jack Butler (the Devil's henchman).
Roth was tapped to replace Vai as Maccio's teacher, but somehow time had run out, so he simply showed R.M. the correct fingering, then overdubbed the parts later.
Ry Cooder is credited with writing the film's music score.

hammer, The listings at the bottom of the IMDB page don't refer to players that showed up on the screen, they're the guys/gals who actually played the music that the actors were strum-syncing. Cooder did not do the R.M. parts, that was Roth. This is from an old interview in Guitar Player, nearly 20 years ago. When the details were still fresh. Many web pages corroborate this, although not many go into the level of detail that I did. But it's all there, if you cast around. I'm confident that any disputes about such credit would have arisen long ago, and would find their way to those same sites. sumgai
