i was watching some g3 vids on youtube and i found this: does anyone know how to blow a harmonic? i tryed it, and all i could do is add some sustain to the note. I guessed that he could have also hit the harmonic with a pull-off with his left hand, but it dosnt look like it to me. Thanks, -Ajent

Ajent Smith... I think Mr. Vai's gain is turned so high, and his signal is soooo juiced that any force, even as subtle as blowing across the strings will produce that type of squeel! Although all three of those guys ( Satriani, Malmsteen, Vai ) are talented beyond belief, when they stand there and tell you how great they are, and then while riffing take giant steps back to the 80's with all that whammy bar stuff... It doesnt do much for me. Id rather watch someone with tone and feeling.. ie SRV, Jeff Beck, Clapton. Just my opinion mon ami!....dont yell at me! lol

FYI, 1. First, Mr. Vai uses the DiMarzio Evolution pickup, which is known well for producing a rather "clean "ish tone in high-gain environment. 2. Second, some of his guitar uses a sustainer system. (I forgot the brand, but I think it's named something like "the ghost sustainer system", and it looks like a blade pickup). One of his guitar that has that system is labeled "Ronx", and it's the one he used in "Whispering A Prayer".

i know for a fact that vai uses a fernandes sustainer. BUT. i have that g3 video where i could swear that he has a sustainiac in his guitar.

His infamous 3-neck has a fretless bottom neck with a sustainer in it.

the problem is, i don't have that video and my connection is dialup but I do a bit of googling, and, yes. Ronx's sustainer IS a sustainiac stealth variant. Thanks for correcting, dunk. (and now I can remember that the Ghost is a piezo pickup system designed by GraphTech.)

hahaha...you got to watch these guys, they are very tricky...a lot of showmanship...
I read an interview with Vai about having lessons with Satriani in his early years. He was relating how Satch played something and with some weird move with his right hand he got the sudden pitch jump effect on the high e string...what was really happening was that he was simply pulling the string off the fretboard, hahaha. There is a bit of illusion there and you do have to watch what they are really up to...could well be something in the left hand creating the effect, or simply feedback!!
The sustainer will also create harmonics and be triggered by any movement of the string, even no movement at all...maybe he did just flick the switch...instant harmonics!!!

I agree with deepblue. Vaughan over Vai any day. Compare Texas Flood to anything from Vai. You feel his sorrow. When you listen to Vai.... you have a headache. A mesmerizing guitar induced headache. But a headache none the less. All three (Vai, Satriani and Malsteen) are awesome. But passion over technique.
Oh and I tried blowing on strings... it does work, but its quarter of the volume of picking or less. It sounds different than picking too. Instead of the instant volume then sharp decline, it fades in then out. Thats if you dont have a sustainer (like me)

im ageeing w/ von and deepblue. you just cant beat the heart that vaughn, clapton and the like have. i know that i have a tab of surfing with the alien from a guitar one/world. the thing looks absolutely midblowing. satriani and the like are incredible for some occasional listening if you feel like slipping into an awe-struck state of guitar bliss. but you have to make sure you slip out of it just as quick. because as frenchie stated before, passion over technique.

Texas Flood isn't too hard of a song... but when it comes on I just stop what I'm doing and listen. Thats the power of SRV. Other guitarists can do that too such as BB King, Muddy Waters, Duane Allman, Robert Johnson etc.
Most of Vai's songs are very difficult but are nothing more than a display of skill. Its nothing I can get into really. Sure hes great. Im not trying to dis him but hes
To put this into perspective. Vai reminds me of hearing Jimmy Page's live Dazed and Confused solo for the third time. I just kind of tune it out because its good but nothing I can really grab a hold of.
