I hear of a bunch of sounds someone can make with a guitar. Many of which dont use the strings. Like holding a remote close to the pickups, and pointing it at them, then pressing buttons on the remote to get some weird clicking sounds. Does anyone know of any other ways to mess with the pickups pr guitar in general to get cool sounds?

If you hold an analogue watch close to the guitar you get the ticking of the second hand... took me ages to realise how I was getting such a regular tick tick tick through my amp

i have a wallet chain. on my zep bass, if i keep it on when i play, you can hear the sound of it hitting the bass. has kinda a cool sound as long as youre looking for that sound.

Let me rephrase that "any weird sounds". I might have to try the watch trick.

Define remote. I wasn't aware that magnetic pickups were sensitive to infrared (frequencies), so pointing may be moot unless it's like really, really, really bright. It may be that the remote has emission/shielding issues (and emissions under 10 KHz aren't cared about much by regulatory agencies).

I use my standard Time Warner Cable remote. Ive also used my friends television (not cable) remote. Just point the IR emitter at a pickup (hold it very close) and press and hold a button.

Then we're speaking of secondary emission from the internal power supply, pretty much what Chris alluded to. BTW, I remember some of the original remotes operated at ultrasonic frequencies. It was wierd to put another log on the fire, and as you closed the fireplace chain curtains, the TV channel would change..... Check out various sources for 'avante garde' and music. This is a rich field of alternative sound generation methods. Start with your favorite search engine, and see what happens. ;D sumgai

Heres a thought... Our electrical sockets have a frequency of 60 hz. (in the americas at least). Thats the equivalent of a Bb note. If we coil a plugged in extension cord on itself to make it a pseudo inductor, could we pick up the magnetic field with our pickups and get a steady Bb coming out of the amp? Someone try this! I don't have an extension cord handy!

...Thats the equivalent of a Bb note.... not-so-much. it's about 1/2 way between B b and B. A b = 58.27 B = 61.74 ...If we coil a plugged in extension cord on itself to make it a pseudo inductor, could we pick up the magnetic field with our pickups and get a steady Bb coming out of the amp? ... and you'd want to do this, because....?

NEVER QUESTION BRUCE DICKINSON!
I dunno why... why not?
Haphazard experimentation can lead to some good times!

I was leaning towards the Walken characterization. The Iron Maiden Bruce is good and all, he may be a pilot and a world class fencer, but theres just something about Walken that terrifies me into obedience.

Well, if it was just "plugged on itself", perpetual motion would need to be engaged.
If the mains were involved, it would be an excellent fuse/circuit breaker tester.
Remember. no one actually wants to BE the (frizzled) Frizzle Fry.

Yeah, my brother had one. It only turned the channel knob one direction and he loved to surf the few VHF channels (5) in those days (60's)
ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk, ka-dunk,
it's time to leave the room.

I've got a Stagg TUM-50 tuner/metronome, and if I hold it close to the pickups the electronics in it make all kinds of annoying high pitched digital signal type noises.

When Chuck Norris wants to talk to God, he respectfully calls Christopher Walken! Then Christopher Walken calls Eric Clapton, because Happy Easter everyone!

Does anyone know of any other ways to mess with the pickups pr guitar in general to get cool sounds? Earlier today, My daughter was getting mad at me for "making all that noise". I don't know what she was talking about, so I put the guitar down so I could go see what was making the offensive noises. I couldn't hear any weird noises when the room was quiet. So I decided I'd watch the TV. The amp was still on, and after a while when I was getting bored I decided to actually turn on the TV. I heard little noises. I always do, but this time she heard them too. Sad commentary on my guitar playing when she thought that noise through the amp was pretty cool. Goofy little chips and stuff when we pointed the remote directly at the selected pickup. I wouldn't run out and try to convince anyone to incorporate this into their act, but what you heard about with the remote does occur. Dan

But yes, that is pretty impractical for a set up on stage... a nice tv right next to your guitar and/or amplifier... not the easiest set up.

hmm .. if you know one of these things, the "mosquito-racket" .. press the switch and do the same thing as your remote. experiment with angle, etc .. .. and i think it also is a good start to be a comedian, too. (no offense, all)

Yes- somehow the thought of an itty-bitty little TV on stage recalls images of the itty-bitty little Stonehenge monument being lowered onto the stage in "This is Spinal Tap". Dan

Reeves Gabriel used a vibrator to get weird sounds from his guitar...Thats funny, my g/f makes weird....ummmm, thats another story. My trusty E-bow is great at making cool sounds on my guitar. A few years back when my daughter was younger, she bought a cheap dollar store fan. It was more or less the size of a Pez dispenser. It had vinyl fins, and not only did it sound cool when you put it next to the pups, but you could also make the fins hit the strings for some more interestng noises.
