Well yesterday my friend and I had a good 5 hours of free time so we went down town. One place I always go when Im down town is Henri's Music. Its a nice place, good selection, and nice sales reps.
Their practice room really got me. Someone sold a Leslie Cabinet. The thing had to have been an original, it looked like it was 40 years old. I was amazed that someone would get rid of a Leslie in such good condition. I have only heard great things about them.
They had so many great guitars and effects pedals that I am wondering. Is there a surplus of vintage/great guitars and accessories?

Vonfrenchie... You know what I would give for an old Leslie speaker! Man I love that sound. I used to play the song Badge over and over just to hear the chorus. Since I dont have the thousands to spare, and the thoughts of hauling a huge heavy cabinet around dont appeal to me either I bought a Boss RT20 rotary simulator. Its not a leslie but its as close as youll get.
As far as a surplus of vintage goes, I think theyre being gobbled up fast. From what I hear, the latest must haves are from the 1970's.

At flea markets, I've seen many a Leslie scavanged/hobbled together from old organs, many of them sound pretty good.....but BOY are they HEAVY! (and usually ugly)
I remember removing the Leslie unit from my Mom's Lowery back in H.S., it was a knuckle buster!

This happened to be very ugly. The foot pedal for it was even oddly shaped and over sized. The unit itself had to be four to five feet tall, a foot and a half to to feet wide and deep. Nice wood panels. I didnt check the price. I only saw leslie then quickly had to run out before my wallet was empty.

I kind of envy you vonFrenchie for even having a local music store.
*sigh* The neighborhood music shop is a rarity in these parts, especially in my area. Both of the tiny, packed to the gills stores I used to haunt have changed hands or types of business multiple times since my beginner days. One now operates in a mall store 17 miles from its original store and deals only in school band instruments nowadays. The other had the owner pass away while I was in college, his wive ran it for a few years (I used to tune up all the string instruments and clean her windows for free a few times a year), she sold it and just recently the fourth owner since closed it down and opened a cleaners *sigh, again*. Another store my band used to frequent had the owner go bi-polar in recent years. I stopped there one day to pick up a piano book for daughter #1 and I asked him a couple questions about the series 1 G&L's he still had in the shop (they've been there for years). When I left and got in my car, he came out of the store, locked up (at 3 p.m.), and proceeded to follow me for a mile and a half, he stopped when he realized I knew he was following me (I waved to him).
*sigh, yet again*
you really can't go home again.

Dan, No, but while you're off visiting the soon-to-expire stores, you should be trotting out your wallet, and offering to buy out the remaining stock. Then consider starting your own store. Oh, wait...... you have daughters, don't you? Silly me for thinking you would have any money left over for your own needs and wants. My bad. sumgai

I kind of envy you vonFrenchie for even having a local music store. *sigh* The neighborhood music shop is a rarity in these parts, especially in my area. . yeh, that's the way it is pretty much all over. I am helping a local Store do some repair work. This store was , at one time back in the 60s through early 90s, THE place to go for guitars, amps, drums....You name it. Mars Music sort of messed it up for most of the places. Then THEY went out of business due to their own poor management. This particular store used to carry every major brand. Now, he sells G&L guitars and some Buddah amps but has to pay for stuff COD since they won't sell give him credit as he doesn't move a lot of inventory fast enough. Another local store used to at least carry some Epiphone stuff until about 10 years ago. I think that was when Gibson/Epiphone started their "minimum required order" routine. He can't afford to carry 5 or 6 Epi LPs as well as several Gibson LPs and, if I recall correctly, a minimum order of around $10k a year. It used to be fun to go into a store, listen to the person tell you about the product, play it, then dicker about the price. Now, it's some kid that will only be there for about 3 weeks and gone. Sometimes they know a little about the stuff, other times....well. And try making a counter offer on something! A couple of years ago I offered $150 less than what they had as a "sale" price. The Guitar had been there for over a year. ( I knew it was the same cause after the first 3 months I wrote down the serial number) I told the guy, Cash, not credit, so that way they wouldn't have to pay any credit card company fees. "Can't do that...this is what we can get for it. Take it or leave it." ? What they could get for it??? It had been there a YEAR!! Oh well, Like ux4484 said, 'you really can't go home again'

Henri's Music (thats the store I was talking about) is apparently an "official Gibson seller" so we have one of the two hundred Gibson George Harrison Les Pauls. Fender also sent one of the first VG Stratocasters. Henris also carries new, Trace Elliot, Marshall, Vox, Peavey, and Fender amps. New, Fender, Gibson, Epiphone, Jackson, Ibanez, and Martin guitars. Boss, EH, Ibanez, and Digitech Pedals. And a bunch of different drum manufacturers. Plus one half of the store is pianos. Also they STILL have the Leslie 700.
Then down the road there is Heids Music, and by our mall there is Guitar Center. I prefer Henris though.
