( EDIT: Dates and places have changed, see Reply #14 below.) Yes, the Commander-in-Chief has declared that this year, we will be taking our vacation a little bit later than usual, about the first and second weeks of September. You know what that means........ ROAD TRIP! ;D We'll be in Des Moines, IA on Sep 8th and 9th, I'm pretty sure, but around those two days, the rest of the time is up in the air. Within that time frame, we'll be driving from Seattle eastwards on one of three routes: US 2, I-80, or Trans-Can 1. We do have additional choices of I-90 and I-94, but we've done those so often...... The return trip will not be on the same highway, just for the sake of variety. ash, you can definitely pucker up, we're pretty much committed to seeing some famous quilter in Duluth, but I'm not sure if she's confirmed a real date, or if it's going to be "just drop in". Of course, all travel depends on who we're seeing that are available at what times. I might be able to talk her into visiting friends in the Detroit area, but I've not yet broached that with her. So far, I can be sure of only the two above mentioned locations, and whatever lies in-between. So, who lives where that's somewhat convenient to those routes? And has time within those dates? I need ammunition for getting close to Akron, 'cause I'm committed to prying newey out of that bomb-shelter he calls a basement. ;D More particularly, does anyone live along I-80 between DM and Detroit? How about between Chicago and Minneapolis? Or, we have friends up on The Thumb, we could go past Green Bay, then over to Duluth (or vice versa), that might get her off the beaten path. Suggestions welcome! sumgai

Definitely drop a line when you get closer. We'll be relocating at the end of September. I really don't ever want to touch snow again.

Well, that may be true in any major city these days, but I haven't expended appreciably more ammunition here that in Western PA (we shoot things there just to see if the gun still works....). Oh, justification.... There is that other small town nearby Akron sometimes called Cleveland Ohio, where they have a minor display of Rock 'n Roll stuff. (For those that haven't heard, it's called the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, you know, that thingy that folks get inducted there into.)

sumgai -
I'm about 2/3 of the way to Chicago from Minneapolis in "non-global warming" Wisconsin.
I also have a spare rake and wheelbarrow if you're looking for some horse nostalgia...

Yes, but just how much cheaper are those oats? ;D And Wisconsin? I thought, from one of your previous postings ( this one in particular), that you were so far north that they charged by the pound of dog food it took to get to your igloo. BTW, did you ever snap up a decent amp (as per that thread)? sumgai

quarry, If I were sick and twisted, I'd say "No, I look too much like a German." Fortunately, I don't have a perverted sense of humor, so I won't say that. ;D

BTW, did you ever snap up a decent amp (as per that thread)? Thanks for asking. Not yet...I keep looking... This may not be Point Barrow here, but the closest music store to me is about 60 miles and it's a GC...and ever since my face cleared up they won't let me back in... There is no used market here that I've been able to find...if it ain't a John Deere or a Holstein it's a short conversation... My job is taking me to Chicago for a few months. My hope is I can hit the pawn shops and make out. I was born and raised there, so if any of my friends made parole I can start asking around... Happy Trails Cynical1

OK, so here's the drill............. The classes she needs to take were moved to August 25th and 26th, so......... We will now be leaving on Thursday the 21st, and taking I-90/I-82/I-84/I-86 from Seattle, WA to Pocatello, ID, US-30 over and into Wyoming, near Rock Springs. From there it's I-80 all the way to Des Moines, IA. Why leave so early? 'Cause she's a quilter, and she needs to stop at every quilt shop she can find! Besides, this way we can write off most of the trip costs, it's for business, don'cha know? ;D So, who's along this route, and available during that time frame? You can be a little bit off the path, but not more than say, 50 miles. And there has to be a quilt shop in or near your town. ~!~!~!~ ash, it'll probably be maybe the 3rd, 4th or 5th of September before we get to Duluth, but we are confirmed for a class therein, so you and I will be able to do the face-face thing for at least a couple of hours. Perhaps with an axe or two? ~!~!~!~ On the way back, the plan is to escape into Canada via the International Boundary waters. I dunno how that's gonna play out, but that's her agenda anyways. Just in case the border guards don't honor our passports, we'll probably take US-2 back. Nice and scenic, a lot less frenetic rushing aboot than the Interstate, 4 lanes nearly all the way, just as cheap gas-wise, and there are more quilt shops along the way. Guess who picked that route? Anyone along the way, either of those two routes, during the second week of September? And no, sorry, but the greedy oil bastids have decreed that we won't be going any further east this year. sumgai

Too bad!! As it turns out, I'll be the one going further east that week as that's my vacation also. We're headed to Philly for a couple of days, then 5 days on the beach at Ocean City, MD. So it wouldn't have worked out anyway- and we'll both be ponying up the pesos at the pump. And if you do come next year- My office is about 8 blocks from "The House That Rock Built", I could literally walk there on my lunch hour. Funny, though, I've never been inside the place . . . So we can go pay homage. But the nostalgia jolt will cost you- last I checked, it was 20 bone at the door.
