First off, I apologize for the southern voice and bad playing... I don't like to record myself... Here is a crude sound clip of The Big Ugly Mod. I didn't record two of the options since they where the same, Parallel OoP #1 and Series Oop #1. I did record both Series #5 and Series OoP #5. These are both humbucker setting but one is reversed from the other, I know that they are the same, but I can hear some thing different, or at least I think I can. Pickups: Front - Dimarzio Fast Track 1 Rear - Dimarzio Tone Zone Amp: Hafler Hellrazor Tube Pre-amp Using clean channel Midi Verb II - Flange Midi Verb II - Warm Reverb 2 - 2x12 Celection Cabinets. www.timecaptures.com/guitar/biguglyex.mp3I recorded down the list like the diagram using Parallel Column, then Parallel OoP Column, Series Column, and last Series OoP Column. Comments welcome.. Good ones of coarse...LOL

Fireball, this is a really great way to compare sounds. I particularly like the chart to go along with the clip. And while some may wish you had more variety in what you played, by repeating the same licks it gives a better comparison of the actual sounds from each pup combination. Good job! ;D

Thanks... Sorry about the variety, I wanted to play a couple of chords and some individual notes. I kept it short since I was going to play roughly 18 settings to keep the track from being a major download (..and I didn't know what else to play.. ;D). I would like to hear a actual humbucker in the front position in this wiring. The Fast Track 1 is a single coil with two blade coils, so its a humbucker in a single coil basically. I have a 7-string and another 6-string I am considering doing the big ugly mod on.

Fireball- No apologies necessary. Playing a short sample of each position is the point, to show the available tones. I think you did a good job with this mod. We've had a lot of discussion about the merits of serial OOP vs. parallel OOP, particularly whether parallel OOP is really useful or more of a novelty. Your clips convince me that, at least in this mod, it's a useful option to have. As far as a regular HB vs. the dual rails,. it would definitely be a different, fuller sound. I think the dual rail pickups get a bad rap from a lot of folks Those who like an HB sound complain that they don't sound like a real HB, those who like SCs like the lack of noise of the dual rails, but complain that they don't have the "sparkle" of an SC. In truth, it's really not either a true HB or a SC, it is what it is by its ownself. I personally like the sound a lot, but I don't expect it to sound like something it's not. (OK, Rant over . . .

Fireball, No-one should ever have to apologise for their accent, and you certainly don't have to apologise for your playing! As ccso8462 says, playing the same lick for each example makes for a far better comparison of each sound, and you have done a good job of playing each one the same each time- I don't see where the 'bad playing' might be in there! This is the best kind of way to give sound samples really- clear, consise and comprehensive, and the visual chart tops it off. I find that flange tends to add a certain tonality to a guitar, and it certainly muddies the issue a little, but I'm sure you have provided quite a handy little resource here to those who are considering some of the many wiring options you have presented. Good work! +1 P.S. I presume it is a Strat-type guitar you are using here???

Great job, fireball! This is a good reference for people who don't know what all those variations mean ... they can actually hear it, instead of reading a description of how a guitar sounds when it has "that quack everyone loves", etc. DD P.S. Love your accent too - don't apologize for anything!
