If you're into HPC (High Performance Computing), NVIDIA has redesigned/re-purposed GPU's for HPC. Thru the end of May09 they have the C1060 at 50% off. These are normally $1,300. www.nvidia.com/object/webinar_promoWhat is a C1060 you may ask? Well, the C1060 is a 240 core parallel processor that executes 933 gigaFLOP/s. That's 933 billion Floating Point Operations Per second. NVIDIA puts four of these in a box called the Tesla. This produces 4 teraFLOP/s in a desk top box. At 6 calculations per minute, it would take every human on the planet working in parallel 2 hours to accomplish what this can do in one second. Then, someone still has to collect their homework. Some folks even build their own. A new computer has been contracted by the Federal government. It will do 20 petaFLOP/s. 20,000,000,000,000,000/sec It will have 1.6 million parallel cores. There are worse hobbieshabits than guitar building and modding......

...it would take every human on the planet working in parallel 2 hours to accomplish what this can do in one second... ...A new computer has been contracted by the Federal government... ...It strikes me that the latter will negate the former in this situation...

No.
After all, automation replaced all the human workers (oh wait, who's gonna buy the stuff).

You make a broad assumption in that all Federal Government workers are human...
