Guys...
The family had decided to take a vacation to sunny California. My daughter wants to stay in L.A...Hollywood to be exact. So I got to thinking. Maybe to treat myself while they do the tourist thang' Id maybe...perhaps pick myself up a new toy. We dont have "Guitar Center" here in Canada. Is that a reputable place to buy?...or does anyone have any suggestions? I hope I can get it across the boarder without a hassle.
P.S.....does anyone have Jessica Albas address? ;D

Unfortunately, Jessica and don't talk anymore. I won't go into it, it's personal. Have you thought about dropping by the Carvin shop when you're there? I realize it's only one brand, but from what I hear it's really an interesting place. Have a safe and fun trip! Post pictures when you get back!

Yeah, but the sales force is often, well, young of knowledge, attitude, brain cells....
Oh wait, you mean the Hollywood store.....
It's a SERIOUS place if one has G.A.S. (one can get into serious trouble there, I did)!
If you're looking for a true vintage instrument, you'll pay top dollar there (it's like, LA, dude!). If you just want to look at true vintage instruments........yee hah!
I've found that the farther away from areas inhabited by folk with way too much discretionary income I get, the better deals I get. I'm currently mulling over a Fender US Sienna sunburst ash rosewood board HSS Strat for $750 NEW in a GC. It ain't near Hollywood, tho'.
Now, web, search......
Define hassle.
If you can't, PM me and I give you an address that you can send it to................
Eh. Ya know, if'n one was to take a geetar with them (preferably in the color that one wanted to acquire) and just switch things.........
B. If one were to take a geetar with them (preferably with the same neckname that one wanted to acquire) and just switch things.........
SEE. If one were to take a serialized neck plate (that one can buy with a random 5 digit numbers from Callaham, or off of a cheep guitar) with them and just switch things.........
If one were to combine some ideas.....
The dark side is the (deep) VAT that you have to deal with, the light side is the current strength of the Canadian dollar. If you can't get around the VAT, maybe you can buy it for export and at least avoid California sales tax.

deep, Well, I don't expect that you're going anywhere like in the next week or two, so why not just ask the nice folks at the Canadian equivalent of what we call "Customs", and see what they have to say on the topic of bringing back an item purchased for personal use, while on vacation. You could, stress the could, take some time and start a legitmate business.... POOF!, you're now a guitar seller, buying, trading and selling musical instruments of value. You've just come back from a buying mission, and have with you an instrument that will be resold, and at that time, the proper VAT and other taxes will be paid by the retail customer. (Although I don't know if this will get you out of any import duties, I'm half inclined to believe that the person physically importing the item pays duty right there at the border, no matter if he's a retailer, a wholesaler, or even just Joe Blow on the street. But I could be wrong on that, better check it out.) And don't forget that some Revenue Agents might have a quota, and are willing to spend the time checking out your story. (More brownie points for them, if they catch you in a lie!) It'd be prudent of you to have someone on standby, ready to swear that he's hot to buy said instrument, should such in inquiry come to pass. He can always 'renege' the sale later, right? Last but not least, you might consider having paperwork on hand that proclaims that you had previously paid for the guitar in question, some time ago...... ergo, the VAT's already been paid, eh? You simply had the thing repaired by the factory, down in the Hew Hess Hay, and since said repairs took longer than expected, you asked them not to bother shipping it back, you thought you'd just pick it up during your upcoming scheduled vacation. ;D Or you can be creative, and make up your own ruse! One more piece of advice - DON'T FLY!!!!!!!! At least, don't board any aircraft whilst within our borders - the Airport Security BOZOs mouth-breathers make it a point to dole out an extra ration of 'power/ego trip' onto foreigner's heads, and I'm afraid that you qualify for that one. Drive instead, you'll enjoy the scenery much more, and you can hidestash several instruments under the floorboards! Just don't them who gave you the idea. HTH sumgai

Thanks guys.... Yep, ill be flying down. Toronto to L.A. would take too long to drive. I am interested in Carvin guitars. Though I have really fallen for the Peavey USA model. What to do, what to do!
Id also have to check the guitar, and trust it makes it to my destination via the airline system. Id worry to whole way home. I could have it Fed Ex'd I guess.
I have a month or so to decide. Thanks again guys.

Well, M. Strat, I'm kinda enjoying the whiskey and guitars. I really don't have time for Jessica anymore. Her loss. Maybe deep can console her when he gets there. Please make sure he gets her current address and phone. Thanks! ;D

Merde! Now I remember ... she did specify why she wanted you instead of me ... and the name of the other board member that you has just mentioned has reminded me of what she said I lacked "deep", please call 555-555-1212 - and ask for her by her codename, "Madamoiselle Goldbond". I warned her that this is a sub-par nickname ... but she does not listen. Tell her Carl sent you. M. Strat

deepblue,
Ya know, the last time that I looked in a Carvin catalogue, they indicated that they covered all import fees and taxes if you paid 3 times the shipping to Canada.
Hmmm, with the strength of the Canadian dollar (ok, well, with the sucky'ness of the U.S. dollar) this might be a real deal. See what you like and just call them up and order it. It will find its way home for you. If you see one in the store, it's probably one of the "guitars in stock" and it can be phone ordered from "Canada".
In essence, it's two times the shipping vs the taxes and tariff. If you order/buy it in person, you gets to pay California sales tax.
I'd have more than a few Carvin guitars if their "we'll configure it OUR way not really custom shop" would entertain the possibility that not everyone a'planet wants a slender 80's shredder neck.
(Bunch of Bozo's...................)

ChrisK... I have been checking out Carvin and I must say I do like what I see so far. I was also advised by friends to just order it here, and have it sent to me. I just thought it would be cool to buy a guitar in the U.S., and then bring it home with me.
Just to clarify...Carvins all come with shredder necks? I hope not. Like you, I like a neck with some beef. I wanna work a little harder with my left hand. I found that my hands, fingers etc...get MORE tired with a shredders neck. I also feel IMHO that the beefier neck guitars sound much warmer.
