My daughter has been invited to a 60's party. The theme is, you have to come dressed as a person from the "psychedelic" era. I was born in 63', but I think I can handle giving her some advice.
She has the "Flower Power" look, but one thing I want to ask you lads about is the scent Patchoulli. I know it was popular back then, and bought some for her from a shop that sells essential oils. Problem is... Its very pungent!...Very woody smelling. Do I add something to it?...I have smelled it in my day, but I dont remember it smelling that strong...I always remember it as being sweeter.
any suggestions?

If you've ever entered a Head Shop you've probably smelled Patchoulli. The lingering odor can be sweet and pleasant, but the undiluted stench can put you off your feed.
It is said to effectively mask the smell of burning hemp and unwashed bodies alike. Probably by searing the olfactory nerve.
Deep, my advice would be to have her use as little as possible - just a dab on the inside of each wrist (the wrist thing comes courtesy of a female friend - apparently that's where ladies are supposed to wear perfume).

Thanks guys... I have been told to dilute the oil with graoeseed oil, and to use a small amount. I dont want her smelling like Grace Slick, or Janis Joplin.

I been using that stuff since the sixties, lol... Polly'sHero is right in using it sparingly.
"It is said to effectively mask the smell of burning hemp and unwashed bodies alike." Ahhhh, ha, ha, ha... Love that, je, je, je.
I usually put it on my upper chest, but just a small drop, split left and right. Might try the wrist, as an experiment, LOL...
Been messing with AXE, a girl said it works.... What did she mean?¿

Soooooo,
You want your daughter to smell like someone that is trying to mask the smell of burning hemp?
Most remedies that disguise behaviour work best in the minds of those trying to disguise such behaviour.
Most of those that were feared to care, just didn't care about small fish (hey, this stuff must work).
But, there are not a lot of uses for this other than for trying to mask the smell of burning hemp.
If she's out of high school, she may not care. If she's a minor or still in high school, do you want the possible attention?

ChrisK... Patchouli is a very popular essential oil. Its found in many perfumes and colognes and India ink for that matter. There are many uses for it besides covering up the smell of "Pot"...or not showering. Its a scent that goes hand in hand with the 1960's...I thought my daughter ( whos only 14 ) should have a little fun at the *adult supervised* party, and go the extra mile with a touch of Patchouli. Shes got long strawberry blonde hair and my girlfriend is making her a headband made of flowers, but for the record ChrisK....I dont think shell being taking a hit of LSD.

deep, Kinda depends on who's gonna play Santa Claus, don't it? I mean, lot's of us old hippies from back then now have gen-u-wine white beards and roly-poly bellies (couldn't say "pot" belly, now could I? ), and if the person hiring Santa isn't careful in their selection process............. I ain't sayin' anything here, ya know, I'm just sayin', tha's all. ;D sumgai

Were I a less responible adult, I might suggest that the smell of burning hemp and unwashed bodies might be a more acurate aura to surround the young lady for a truly accurate flower power experience. But I realise the foolhardiness of turning up to a party that way.(In some circles, at least!)
And Sumgai, now that you've given away the fact that you're not really 27, I'm starting to doubt that you actually live in the Vatican now. And I'd gone and told all my friends, too...

The party is five houses away from my house. The girl whos having the party I have known since she started school with my daughter, therefore I know her parents as well. Wonderful people, who have the same values as I have in regards to raising their children. I have 100% NO worries in sending her to the party. As I have stated, the parents will be home, also of note there will be no boys at the party. You fellas are really reading too much into this.

Sorry!! I didn't mean to sound like I was casting any aspersions, I was just being silly. The fact of the matter is that I have no idea what patchouilli smells like, but I wanted to join the hippy thread. We musos may not be very rock'n'roll in real life, but we don't half like the IDEA of it!

deep, The exercise here wasn't that we were reading too much into your query, it was the fact that we are all trying our damnedest to not get personal with you and yours. I'm sure you recognize that the opportunities are abounding (aboonding, if your name is ChrisK) for all manner of jest, but they'd be far more personal than called for (or allowed, by me!) here, on an obstensibly family-friendly board. So far you seem to have taken it all in the spirit intended, and no has stepped out of line, I'm happy to say. But I do love a good double-entendre, if you will. Andy, I can't recall exactly (I was there, so I'm not allowed to remember it), but I think that Patchoulli smells very earthy...... sort of like the dirt that the hippies used to sleep on/in, when their mobile homes were in the shop. (That would be the infamous VW Microbus. ) Come to think of it, deep....... A clean hippy is an oxymoron. If your daughter is as clean as I think you're raising your kids to be, the smell of Patchoulli might be enough to drive her up the wall. I suggest that you experiment a couple of days ahead, to make sure you don't overdose both her, and her party-mates. HTH sumgai

Whoa, not really aiming at anyONE, just tryin' to advise in general, especially after reading this yesterday; What illegal drug use can cost youI remember many that were "branded" in their youth. Much wasn't true, some was. Rep's last a long time. And, in corporate America, we won't/can't hire these folks, period. Ever. Reality is based on perception.

Somewhere between 6 in the morning and 6 in the evening of December 5th, we lost one of our best members. I can't think of any reason why that should be so, but there it is, staring us in the face. It's obvious that somewhere within that 12 hours, deepblue read something on this forum that offended him enough so that he thought the best thing to do was to drop out. I don't see it myownself, and even if I could, it's too late to cast aspersions. Moreover, some/any form of punishment laid upon the (alleged) offender will not bring deep back, or so I should think. Some of you will recall that a long time ago, I also took offense at something someone said, and quit the forum. It took me about 3 months (and a Dutch Uncle chat from both UnklMickey and ChrisK) to get over it. From that experience, I predict that deepblue will also be back, when he's good and ready, and not before. Sadly, I did not foresee this coming, so I don't have his home/private/off-board email address. If any of you have it (presumably because you corresponded with him away from the board), please, send him an email and ask him to come back. I suggest (a tad strongly) that you not ask him what went wrong, that's for him to decide to share or not, but we just don't want our fair-haired boy lost and wandering around in the big, bad world all by his lonesome! deep, I can't express with words how I'm feeling about this, and I'm sure the same goes for everyone else here. Please, man, come back to us, your buddies from all over the planet! sumgai

I feel quite sorry that I was among the last couple of people, maybe even the last to post before Deepblue decided we had crossed a line somewhere.
I joined this forum not too long ago because besides the good technical knowledge and advice here, the community seemed very helpful and friendly, and I wanted to keep learning and to contribute what I could too.
I'm sad that our playful banter (albiet on a rather shady subject) has upset a long serving member, and wherever they be due, Deepblue, you have my sincere apologies.

Deep,
It's the downside of online communities that sometimes you get rubbed the wrong way. It's a bit like being at work, there are just some people you are not going to get along with (or like what they have to say), and sometimes you have to either call them on it or ignore them to get along. Well no one is paying you to be here, but I feel we'd be less without you here. From one middle aged dad to another: c'mon back.
