This is a design for a fairly simple HSS wiring, using a standard Strat 5-way switch and a push/pull for ‘Coil cut’ and ‘Bridge on’. It was made for discussion on another thread and to record an idea. The notable parts of this design are: - Using the 2nd half of the 5-way to select which coil of the Bridge Hb is selected, thus maintaining optimised humcancelling when a split Hb is mixed with either Neck or Middle single coils
- Using the push/pull not only to split the Hb, but also to force the bridge pickup on, therefore providing the missing N+B and N+M+B combos in addition to the standard Strat selection
- Master Volume and Tone controls, with the third pot position used to provide variable split of the humbucker. That can be useful, not only to give more sound options but also because often a split bridge Hb sounds a little thin, and this allows some extra weight to be added.
Schematic:
Wiring diagram:Note the wiring uses colours from StewMac pickups. For a normal Humbucker with four conductors and Seymour Duncan colour codes, translate as follows: StewMac-----SDBlack-----Green+bare White-----Red/White joined Red-----Black Additions to the design could include: - A phase switch on the bridge, to swap the hot and ground (assuming a separate grounded bare wire, as on an SD pup). This would also maintain the humcancelling arrangements in this circuit
- Putting a cap in series with the coil-cut pot, for a different, fuller coil-cut sound.
regards John

Thank You! That's the scheme I've been looking for! Just one question: Is this vital for "Volume" and "Bridge coil cut" POTs to be 250k?

slavagen-
Pot values aren't going to be critical, assuming you're talking about substituting 500K or some other reasonable value. A higher value for the coil cut pot will change the operation of the control slightly, but it will probably not be a dramatic difference if you use a 500K.

When I did my 'split' thing on my strat which uses 500Ks I tired both as I recall and the 250K was a heap better....otherwise it can act more like a 'switch' rather than a gradual range of 'split and a bit'. 500k's for volume and tone in mine..but then a different scheme

.... 500k's for volume and tone in mine..but then a different scheme Would You be more specific on that? The Guitar... www.guitarnuts2.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=music&action=display&thread=5413The wiring thread with most details... www.guitarnuts2.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=wiring&action=display&thread=5401I had a thread on the 'problem' here... www.guitarnuts2.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=wiring&action=display&thread=5449The pickups are a seymour duncan JB HB in the bridge and two SC sized stacked noiseless fenders. So, moderately powerful pups that normally take 500K pots. Master volume and tone...the 'series/parallel option in the volume p/p and a half-phase (HOoP) switch on the neck pup in the tone p/p. The middle control is the 'spin/select'...250k push pull. Turning down, this control spins out the bridge most coil of the bridge HB leaving the neck most coil progressively...I also included a tiny cap between the coils in this mode which gives a slightly different effect to the graduation in the inbetween sounds. When I used a 500k pot, as it was turned, the result was that it very quickly went from full HB to split...so virtually a switch rather than a gradual fade out of one coil or another. A 250k seemed/s to work out pretty well, I was limited in choice as I needed a push pull. This gives you the flavors between; eg split plus half of the other coil. While the full split gives a more fender like bridge pup sounds and balance with the other pups (as well as straty middle and bridge sounds) a little of the other coil better matches my 'SC's' and provides some noise cancelling too. I generally use it turned down to a split, the neck most being my preferred split, and can use this control to bring in a bit louder thicker 'lead sound' as required. So a really useful control...I eventually settled for this version... so The Mike Richardson scheme is also great...I find the 'middle' only of less use, this scheme does not offer that, but the more tele like neck and bridge instead in the middle position...in the series mode you can get both all three in parallel or series... If you count the spin select as 3 different flavours (full, split and half split) that makes for 30 combinations possible. But it is not the number but the ease of use and logical layout and being 'invisible' that I like. I rarely use the series options, but they are interesting sounds. So, a spin select or split kind of control will certainly make the HSS strat format a lot more useful and bring back some of those more strat like sounds that you kind of lose with the HB in there The MR scheme though is a complex one that requires a super switch to do...the scheme that john presents here is easier and cleverly puts the coil cut in the tone control and 'bridge on' and coil cut controls and with the more standard switching parts
