If you haven't seen this guy play, you're missing out.

I would like to point out the location of his left thumb.
Also, my first day calling for fundraising for the democratic party, my FIRST call sat on the phone with me for eight minutes insisting that I check this guy out on youtube. If that guy was you, newey, why would you put me through that aweful experience?
almost forgot, wow.

Wasn't me, I gave at the office. And, if you can play a bass line like that with your thumb, I'm sure your guitar instructor won't complain too loudly . . .

I know, I was just pointing it out. I have noticed that alot of the players that "leave your jaw hanging" play with the thumb over the neck, or way higher than suggested.

I know, I was just pointing it out. I have noticed that alot of the players that "leave your jaw hanging" play with the thumb over the neck, or way higher than suggested. Yeah, but at least they're doing it for musical reasons, and not just to hang it somewhere, like they see their hero- de-jeure doing. There are many players of all skill levels that are constantly driving classic-method guitar instructors crazy. It's a proven fact, found over centuries (as in dozens of lifetimes!), that a student will fare much better in his/her progress if he/she adheres to the classic method for as long as possible, before developing quirks of their own. T.E. is a very quirky player, no doubt about it! But notice, he uses his thumb most of the time to enhance the music, and other times, he fingers exotic chords with the thumb right where it belongs. He doesn't seem to be 100% consistent, but he's close. I'm sure that with him, it's all about how the Muse strikes him at the moment. And for those who think that his rendition of the Arthur Smith classic is "the way it's done", you'll need to slip into your Depends for this one. Mason Williams is probably smiling very broadly. ;D That is all. sumgai

T E is a legend down here, one of the greatest Aussie guitarists ever - and his brother Phil is great too. I dont care where his thumb is! BTW, at the other end, he usually uses a thumb pick plus fingers

Thank you gui, for taking the bit of too much pride I was getting. It's never healthy to have too much of it, and dangerous for a noob to have alot. I was cocky-ish, and I was put in my place. But I believe in learning from idiotic mistakes, so once again, thank you.

WannaStrat- I don't think SG was slamming you, just pointing out that you'll progress farther/faster using tried and true techniques. Once one learns the classically correct technique, one is free to improvise to suit one's taste. I find it's much more difficult to "unlearn" bad habits I've developed over the years than it would have been to have learned correctly from the start. And I've got plenty of unlearnin' to do. Mind you, I'm not saying the thumb thing is bad, it has its place in guitar technique. But you may find yourself limited if it becomes the only way you play. Just a few gray-bearded wisdom nuggets . . .

Yeah, what newey said, ain't no rammin' and slammin' goin' on 'round here! ;D It was meant more in the vein of ya gots to walk before ya can run, tha's all. But just to show you no hard feelings, here's a slightly different take on using one's thumb(s): Enjoy! sumgai

Oh, no hard feelings whatsoever! And I don't think you slammed me, but in actuallity put me in my place. Also, newey, I accept and appreciate all grey-bearded nuggets of wisdom. There's a reason they are grey-bearded, IMO. Also the whole "wisdom" part.

But just to show you no hard feelings, here's a slightly different take on using one's thumb(s)... And here's how to do it on steroids... Sad to think they're both gone now. Happy Trails Cynical One
