Reading through old posts, I've found almost no drama. I have to ask, how the hell did this happen? Forums are, almost by definition, a place for people with conflicting opinions to go and duke it out. Is all the drama being censored out? Or is this community just that respectful of it's fellow members?
I just thought I should point this out, considering how many members you have, how long you've been open, and just leaving the Les Paul forums. Those guys are vicious. I dare not sign up there.

By and large we are a pretty civilized bunch. Everyone here either really needs an answer or enjoys passing along their knowledge.
And from day one you are expected to have a thick skin.
We have had our moments, but they tend to be short lived.
I believe newey and sumgai are responsible for alot of the laid back nature of this board. Both have kept things at an even keel for some time now. The late ChrisK was a big influence here as well. His presence is sorely missed.
Glad you like it here.
Happy Trails

In all my time here, I can remember only one instance of some flame-baiting, and it was handled by Unklmickey, almost before I could sign in for the day to see what's up. There was another instance of someone getting rather uppity, but he never got personal, so I let it ride for some time. Only after several long-time members PM'd me with complaints did I finally drop the Ban Hammer. If memory serves me rightly, Unklmickey also PM'd me one day, well before I took the helm, knowing that I might get involved with a certain "crunchy_potato", and asking me to stand back (which of course I did). That got a bit tense for a few moments, since Unk wasn't (and never did become) a moderator or an admin. But RandomHero was already checking in less and less, and Unk was more-or-less free to handle such things. I think that's about it, really. We all care passionately about our choices in what we use, how we apply our choices, etc. But just about everyone that's come aboard has been respectful of the fact that their choice may not be the best choice for everyone on the planet. I don't know, call it serendipity or whatever, but those that come sniffing around looking for trouble are probably wise enough to understand quickly that they won't find any here - we just don't go in for that kind of thing. Glad you asked, and glad to have you aboard! You cause people to think, and that's a good thing. Well, after playing a popping-good gig at a new venue, that's probably a bit better. But that's just my opinion, you understand. ;D sumgai

Thanks for the kind words, IJWS! Other than banning obvious spammers, I've never had to censor anybody in the year or so I've been admin here. I am thankful that the level of discourse here remains "above the belt", so to speak. Personally, I've always felt that life's too short to invest one's time in drama for the sake of ego gratification. If I'm frustrated or moody, I find it more satisfying to work it out on my guitar than on other people. Sometimes, I may even find a new lick that way . . .

But RandomHero was already checking in less and less, and Unk was more-or-less free to handle such things. Speaking of UnklMickey, His photobucket images are disappearing ... ... the images seem to still be there ... if you right-click the image and select "properties", and then copy the url into your browser and take a "direct route" to the image, the do show up (for the time being). For example, the images don't display properly - for me, at least - in this thread), but can be seen if I insert the actual url into my browser (e.g. i21.photobucket.com/albums/b269/unklmickey/gn2%20schematics/HumSing.gif ). Too bad that we've lost Unk and now his images are being lost as well. I always wondered what happened ... if he passed away ... or just left the forum ... ?? ... It's interesting that where his images used to be, it now says "unklmickey's account has been inactive for 90 days ..... ". I can tell you that his images are only now disappearing ... I've been watching. ... but I also suspect that photobucket is not very strict about regulating the 90 day inactivity rule. Cheers, D2o EDIT: Remember - I did say "but can be seen if I insert the actual url into my browser". Simply clicking the link does not work, you must copy the link address into your browser.

I'm also getting the same result with Unks posts - visible only with a direct link to the images in a browser. One would fear that the account may soon be deleted entirely
This is a new issue for us, how to preserve the Internet? On a related note, Geocities is going down in two weeks time and is not being replaced, so thousand of home-made web sites will vanish, including my own one. (I have it saved, and I intend to put it somewhere else once Ive updated it)
But with Unk, as I recall, when he left, there was nothing leading up to it, so I fear he was suddenly taken from us. I had emailed him on occasion before, and I had no further response trying to reach him that way.
In the schematics section, he had three design threads, being his Hum sing, Brian May Trilogy and Big Ugly. All clever work and worth preserving. Would it be possible to re-save those diagrams in another photobucket area and add the relevant image links next to the original ones? I'd be happy to do that but don't have such rights.
cheers
John

I find it amusing that for how high-tech we are now-adays, we still need to make tangible copies of everything. If I were in a better situation to do so, I would do it, and chronicle everything, but seeing as I am lacking a fire-proof filing cabinet, and a ton of paper, I think that doesn't seem like the best idea....

I don't know if you can save the directly linked images to your image account (smartchat, in your case?) and supply the urls to Newey or sumgai (you said "rights" - which may prevent this), but if you can, they can edit the original urls ... or leave the original - for posterity - and simply add your new url as well. Otherwise, anyone with a photobucket account could do it. If you cannot host the images, can you please list the urls that you speak of, so one of us with a photobucket account can "preserve" the images? I had tried emailing Unk a few times as well ... nada. He was a good guy. Cheers, D2o

SG and I have had some "behind the scenes" discussions on this very topic recently, and we are working on a solution. More to follow . . .

As a long time member, I have to say its probably because of the people who were already here. I stumbled upon this forum over 3 years ago as a young (15 years old) and naive kid. I was greeted with open arms and my question was answered.
I completely agree with you. We all have our own tastes (I personally am a Gibson guy, I really really REALLY don't like Fenders) and we don't push them onto others too much and don't criticize others for having their own opinion. We're all different, and I guess we all realize that and accept it. Diversity creates interest, without it we'd be stuck in monotony.

The lack of drama is probably the biggest reason that I frequent this place.
I don't pop in as much as I used to, but I can only remember one issue on here.
I miss Unk quite a bit. He was one of the first to help me w/ anything on here. between him, SG, Chris and John you guys have helped w/ a boatload of gear problems.
Thanks to everyone for being civil and making this an enjoyable place to frequent. Hopefully when I find more time I will pop in more to help and see how everyone is doing.
Thanks again,
Tyler
