What is this karma thing and how exactly did I end up with -1? Hopefully I've not offended anyone Jorg, KARMA: ... is good ... • noun (in Hinduism and Buddhism) the sum of a person’s actions in this and previous states of existence, viewed as affecting their future fate. SMITE: ... is baaaaad ... DON'T NOBODY BE SMITING NOBODY, A-IGHT? 2 a: to kill or severely injure by smiting b: to attack or afflict suddenly and injuriously <smitten by disease> Smiting is most often a case of someone clicking on it to see what happens and then forgetting to undo their dirty deed. I don't see anything that you have done that would be worthy of smiting you. TO ALL GN2: DON'T MAKE ME COME DOWN THERE! There will be no smiting on this board! If you have an issue that is serious enough that you would consider smiting, PM the person and work it out. Odds are they did not intend such offense. If you smite in error, as was obviously the case here, please go back and exalt to make things right. Carry on. EDIT: what the $^&^$&% ... 20 Karma? Thanks, guys. I've missed this place.

DD, What? Are you gonna smite me for restoring your previous standing? Hey, if I can't use the administrator functions of this job for a good reason..... ;D If I was even remotely sure of your old post count, I'd restore that too. Oh, and by the by..... [glow=red,2,300]Welcome Back![/glow] sumgai

jorg, I noticed that too........ After due deliberation, I found no cogent reason for the Smite, so I cancelled it out with an Exalt. Karma is sort of a way to thank someone on a nearly permanent basis. Saying "thanks" in a message is good, but in a short time, everyone will have forgotten all about the whole thing. Karma points are right out there in front of Gawd and everybody, all the time. But they should be taken with a grain of salt. One should correlate the number of posts to the Karma count. A high ratio like JohnH's is indicative of being very helpful, whereas ChrisK and I have quite low ratios......... you can draw your own inferences from that. Obviously, DD842 ver 2.0 above is extremely helpful - go ahead, ask him anything! HTH sumgai

Oh, and by the by..... [glow=red,2,300]Welcome Back![/glow] Thank you very much! By the way, you'd have to cut that karma in half to put me where I was. Exalt! ... that's what the good deed is called. Sorry if I threw you off when I defined karma, Jorg. I meant Exalt: to raise in rank, power, or character

I wonder what I did. Unless there's a karma fairy. That would be awesome. Its staff would be a karma-shaped guitar. Does karma have a shape?

Hmmm, smacks of an "OZ"spiracy to me. So, you're encouraging anti-smitic behaviour? (Good, I'd hoped that it wasn't anti-semantic). ;D Now, drop the "e" (smit) or add the "t" (smitten) and you have Gear Acquisition Syndrome, which is an anti-bad thing. It's always (well, usually) been my goal not to offend anyone either (everyone, whoa, that's a different concept). Hmmm, sounds like a "research project" (as in like what does happen if'n you have to come down "there"). Just curious, since Don't make me come down there....... was an empty threat anyway. It's nice to see that you got your service pack............. But with language like this ... 20 Karma is too much! The masochist and the sadist; Smite me, smite me, No.

Ok, I've wondered about this myself. So..... can anybody give anybody karma? Is that what it means when someone posts " + 1 to you ......" ? I've been too skeerd to click on this stuff just to find out . lpf3 - oh, I almost forgot-I've been able to figure out most of the abbreviations , but what does lol mean ?

lpf- Yes, the "+1" means the poster in question has just gone over to click on the little "exalt" button under the Avatar of the person to whom Karma is being given. This act then adds 1 karma point to the total of the person so favored. And anyone can do it to/for anyone else. And, of course, the implied corollary is that one should use it sparingly so as not to cheapen it like a third world currency. So far as I am aware, Karma points are not redeemable for airline miles.

Kind of a long way to go for such a sad joke, but... Karma is a most often depicted and/or described as a wheel.

Chris, I was deliberately quoting a fairly knowledgeable feller with that threat - I am glad you picked it up. Ash, If anything, I am extra cheese flavoured now - watch out! Thanks for properly roughing me up on my return. I wouldn't want to think you were ignoring me. P.S. Ash, I have always suspected what you have been consistently proving over the past number of months: you know your stuff.

DD, Your post count and Karma points have been restored correctly. Thanks for playing "Taste My Cheese!"..... may we have our next contestant, please. ;D ~!~!~!~ lpf3, Yes, anyone can Exalt/Smite anyone else, at any time, for any reason, with or without an accompanying message. That's why Chris asks in his referenced thread that if you have an issue with someone, you PM them and settle it "out of court". Smiting someone, particularly without identifying one's self, does indeed cheapen the currency, and promotes bad vibes (the Karma wheel gets a flat tire, so to speak). <lol> means Laughing Out Loud. On this Forum, we use the grown-up's version, smilie face icons. HTH sumgai
