i was listening to some of their stuff and man is it good.
i especially loved the tone on "just an old fashioned love song" near the end. anyone have any clue what equipment they were running at the time or could have used?

3 Dog Night is a fave of mine as well, love their cover of Laura Nyro's "Eli's Coming".
But as far as equipment choices for any given song, good luck. I'm not sure on this, but my recollection is, their backup band was pretty much whichever LA studio rats ABC/Dunhill Records could rope in for the sessions. The record company basically paired the group up with songwriters also under contract with the label- a win-win for the label. And I believe when they toured it was with a different group of session guys.
