Something we tend to forget in the USA is that in the smaller countries around the world, fielding and supporting an Olympic team is a huge struggle.
For this young man to make this team and to make the physical and financial sacrifice to get to this level of competition in the world speaks volumes about his character.
He may never have won a medal in this event, but he worked incredibly hard to be there against very long odds. He deserved a chance to compete at the Olympic level. He will not have that chance now.
Losing this young man is a sad. The greater loss is that of the spark that made him one of the select few who reached his level in the world.
Nodar Kumaritashvili, Rest in Peace. May your spark ignite another Georgian to take up your place and excel.
