That's right, I found newey's surf music teacher! Now, ordinarily drummers don't make good guitar teachers, but in newey's case, he made an exception!! I think this adequately explains why newey stays home in his basement!! .... .... ;D These guy are not far from newey's home base, so it was a natural to "pick" on him. Nuttin' personal, eh? sumgai p.s. Check out their other videos on the 'tube, particularly "This drummer is at the wrong gig!" p.p.s I have no idea how that iframe got in there (next to the video clip), it's certainly not in the message box. Sorry if it's messed up the post with anything undesirable.

That's kind of cool...a worry about the audience and there seemed more in the band than there were out front...and that face scared me...thanks...so far from the beach... But now as I actually live on a surf island and it's summer, there's a few surf tunes coming out of the fender gear here... And since surf music comes up a bit here...there is a lot of variety. What that clip reminds me of is that in surf, the drums are so important... This band is one of my faves...Slacktone...vintage equipment and sound but with the 'shredding' sensibility and perhaps the best drummers in surf... Not sure if that embeding worked...hmmm...here's a link... Even if you p[refer the more sedate 'ventures' kind of approach ...such as on this laika and the cosmonauts tune, the drums play a huge part in the 'surf sound'... Good example of why the strat is THE guitar (as Dick Dale would confirm) to play surf...sure the Jag, Jazz and other odd ball guitars may look "cool"...but nothing 'drips' and simply works like a strat for this kind of stuff... Surf is a lot harder than is seems to do really well...very different mind set in lots of ways... (edited by newey to fix links)

Gee, I've been paying for lessons all this time when all I really needed was a gold lame jacket? ;D ;D ;D BTW, did anyone catch the shout-out to the PMRC? That, plus the guy on the cover getting big air on his olly, would be reason enough to buy the disc . . . ;D

Thanks Newey, don't know why the embedded code didn't show with the 'tube' link... That Reverb warning is warranted though...that's the cover of their first record I got years ago (came out in 1997 and the band still going strong and touring the world I see)...16 tracks, most under 3 mins, all originals that sound like classics but a great version of 'goldfinger'... That track was from their second album..."into the blue sparkle"...the cover makes you just stare into the blue sparkle finished jag...LOL Another contemporary surf band is "the Mermen"... Almost zappa-esque at times...and an innovative (and not bad looking) bass player back then...Thomas is a bit of a 'nut' running each pickup through a separate cable to different amp and effects and mixing them with volume pedals... There are two tracks there, the first is one (ocean beach) I feel in love with for a bit...really evocative new surf sound...the second one gives a taste of their mix of surf-isms and effects mixing...some stuff though does get a bit out there though as are their song titles generally. Good to see more of a role for a bass player in surf though... I suspect a lot of surf bands were in reality a lot more like Dick Dale but tamed right down for commercial consumption back in the day...but there is still good music back then and there are rare... And the bass always seemed relegated to the background in most surf music which always seemed a bit odd. I like to see what can be done in a trio format... This is another track...and not just cool because their old bass player played and well...looked so good (some serious boots there!)...but adding some new funky feels and abandon to the genre while staying true to the sound and spirit not just the cliches... I've seen a lot of guys (including me) try and combine blues and surf or perhaps 80's shredding (Hoey comes close I suppose) and surf with less than stellar results...many are great players in their own way but they tend to be too guitar dominated, the drums in particular are so important... But writing a classic tune in this genre is not as easy as it seems...there is a formula (theme and variation, reverby sound, trem dips, double picking, glissandos, etc) but that alone is not enough to make something that doesn't just sound like one of the old classics...and so many 'surf bands' lack the fire of a slacktone and mermen to my ears... Love to hear some more new stuff...I think I'm getting a hankering in 2011...oh, which is tonight my time!

Well, you've already referenced Laika and the Cosmonauts and the Mermen- 2 of my faves (and I believe sg's faves as well, not to speak for him or anything).
There's plenty of "new surf" here in the great American Midwest, hundreds of miles from the nearest ocean. Two of my faves are The Atomic Mosquitos, from Ann Arbor, Michigan:
And The Madeira, from Indy:
But, I'll shut up now because I believe sg has a sizeable collection of surf- and has his ears out for the newer stuff moreso than I do.

When the idea of a GN2 Surf Jam was first floated I started listening to surf music to make up for a significant void in knowledge of the genre. While piddling through Pandora I ran across these guys: It seems Los Straightjackets has been around for over 20 years. They do instrumentals only...and their gimmick is Mexican wrestling masks. In case you're curious, they're playing DiPinto guitars. Seems Dick Dale has one, too. And I've posted a few of the Gary Hoey surf covers...which I happen to favor, and Satriani did a pretty decent cover of Sleepwalk, but anyone ever catch this one: And I had to post this one, too. Granted, Hank Marvin isn't new, but this is a very pretty cover of this song. Real classy guy, too. And I agree with 4Real, surf is not as easy as it appears on first glance. There's almost a baroque structure that if you deviate too far afield it sticks out like a rib platter at a vegan convention. Happy Trails Cynical One

The dog ate my homework!
I had a nice long speech all set up, and my internet connection went down, just as I was waiting for the "Preview" page to display.
Sigh.
I'll be back, after I get over my mad.
