As many of you are aware, I haunt eBay quite a bit. I don't buy much, but it's a great way to research the value of things in the world. I happen to trip over this guitar currently up for auction. It's billed as the genuine 1999 Jem Ultra Zone guitar made for Steve Vai for his Ultra Zone tour to resemble the guitar on this CD cover. The guitar I saw that most closely resembled the one on the album cover was built by Alistair Hay and looked like this: ...but that one ain't for sale... Take heart, they do have the auction open to a "Best Offer". If you're feeling flush, drop by eBay and make an offer.Happy Trails Cynical One

Will be fun to see how much it finally goes for. Wouldn't know it was made to resemble the guitar on the album cover unless it had been stated as such. To my eyes that's an abomination of guitar.

Now, if only they made the right sized bottles...

Sam's club- Google says that when I was in Denver I stayed equidistant between the two in the city. Little did I know! I'll have to wait 'til next November to pay them a visit.

OK, I thought about it. Here's one that'll save you an easy $79,000.00 on the Vai guitar, and you'll have something useful and classic. Vintage 1960 Fender Jazzmaster Electric Guitar Project It's around $477.00 now, but the reserve has not been met. According to description, what's left of the original case and a good deal of the original hardware comes with it. Now that wasn't too painful...besides, someone's gotta pick up the slack until Gumbo comes back... Happy Trails Cynical One

I should respond to that .... that.... thing on eBay. But I won't. I'm trying really hard to be a good boy. Still, for 5 portraits of Benj. Franklin, Esq. that's not a rough row to hoe. Nice find. But not worthy of accolades for bringing us back on topic - so sorry, please try again! ;D

I'm trying really hard to be a good boy. ...let me mark the calendar... OK, to drag this thing back on topic, I dug around to try and find some history on this guitar. The pickings are slim out there, but I did find this from Rich on Jemsite: "For those that don't know the history, this was something JD built on his lunch break, just being nice. Nobody asked for it, nobody commissioned it, he just thought it would be cool to make him a guitar to emulate what was on the UZ cover. He used a JEM90 neck and put in maple? crossed inlays, the body I believe he built from scratch.
Steve being Steve, he immediately gave to Jemfest? to raffle off . A SEVEN YEAR OLD GIRL was the winner [although, she might have been 8 or 10, it was a decade ago]. Within 2 weeks her jackass father was trying to fish offers of 15or25k, whatever ridiculous number it was, including posting an add for it in this forum and on ebay, etc. Evidently he found the one person on Earth that put any serious value on it at all, and Fernando traded him an older Vette [my guess, 8-10k worth of Vette at the time] for it.
It was crazy then, and he's evidently even more crazy now. NOW it probably has the value he paid for it then, but now he's trying to get 10 times the number.
If anybody remembers, about a year later Emerald Guitars presented Steve with a VERY COOL and very close rendition of the UZG, that one I believe Steve kept."
Not sure how accurate this information is, but it seems Rich is a respected inside source for all things Ibanez on Jemsite.
The Emerald guitar was pictured back in the first post of the thread beneath the guitar in the auction. A link to the guitar on their website is here.
Topic now restored to its original thread...for now...
Happy Trails
Cynical One
PS: And you know you want that 1960 Jazzmaster...it's coming to get you, sg... And what's a few Benjamins to a quilting magnet such as yourself... We both know you you can finish that guitar and double your investment on it...or better... Run, go...get to the auction...

aren't the jazzmaster and the jaguar the same guitar with different electronics?

Well, Hendrix actually played a Jazzmaster... ...while he just posed for a canned TV appearance with a Jaguar... While both employed single coils as stock, the construction of the Jazzmaster single coil was much beefier, similar to a P90, where the Jaguar pickups tend to look more like the ones you'd find on a Strat. The greatest physical difference is the scale length. A Jaguar is 24" while the Jazzmaster uses the longer Fender 25.5" scale. The Jaguar also employed a string mute, which explains part of the difference in the appearance of the bridge. And the circuitry is similar, but there are a few differences that separate them. I don't consider myself an expert on either one, but I do like the looks of a good Jazzmaster...like the red one on eBay that sg should be bidding on... Happy Trails Cynical One

No. The Jag was traditionally a 24" scale, the JM is/was 25.5".
Now all the reissues, "Blacktop Editions", etc. muddy things up a bit, Fender (and Squier, too) are calling all kinds of different things a "Jaguar" or a "Jazzmaster".
EDIT:Ninja'd by Cyn1!
The Jaguar also featured a string mute, supposedly to appeal to surf guitarists who would often palm-mute. Pretty much everyone took these off, and it's tough to find vintage ones with the mute still there. Kinds like the "ashtray" bridge covers for Teles and Strats- they tended to disappear over time.

l always thought they where the same because the bodies where the same, lt never occured to me about their scale, l thought the only differences were electronically!!! other than the bridge of course. Well as they say 'ya learn something new everyday'. ;D
