I figured tagging this to the bottom of roadtonever's post on his "Bass in Space" diagram was derailing the thread well past my normal standard for such acts, so I'm putting it here. The younger one's here won't remember Bootsy Collins...or that he played with James Brown coming up...or that he was the epitome of "out there" in the 70's & 80's...and still leads the field today...much less his Space Bass. You might remember that he did a stint with Buckethead in Praxis...but that's probably pushing the envelope, too... Here's one of his Space Basses... I can't look at that post and not think of Bootsy's Space Bass. Maybe it's an age thing. Here's some of what it could do in action... I caught his act a few times ages ago in Chicago...this is pretty tame... Anyway...that's out of my system now... BTW, clever idea RTN. I like it. Happy Trails Cynical One

You can do anything you wanna do with it, ya know? do with it, ya know? do with it, ya know? do with it, ya know? do with it, ya know?
+1 for educational material.

Actually, it was James Brown who demanded the bass hit "On the one", and go where it wanted to on 2-3-4...as long as it was back on the one.
It would stand to reason that Bootsy would have picked it up there, but you gotta give credit where credit is due...not to take a thing way from Bootsy...
Actually, it's a great practice routine on the bass as it really helps you develop a sense of feel on the bass.

I'm old enough to remember the Space Bass. But I'm trying to recall who it was, might have been Bootsy but I think it was someone else, who had a custom bass made into a wearable jumpsuit- anyway I have a vague recollection of something like that being done back in the '70s.

I'm trying to recall who it was.... who had a custom bass made into a wearable jumpsuit .... back in the '70s. Right you are, Counselor. That would be Dan Hartman, during his stint with Edgar Winter, in 1975 or maybe it was '76. I couldn't find any videos on YouTube, but that only means I ran out of patience..... they might be available on some other video site. My Google bio-rhythms are out of whack today. sumgai

I just had to spend some google time on that one: Would this be bold and fashionable back in the day? ;D These two guys certainly seem like compatible forces

"Bright college days, oh carefree days that fly- To thee we sing with our glasses raised on high . . ."
Anyone who can quote Tom Lehrer lyrics is no ankle-biter. And to think we were worried that Bootsy might be forgotten- who the hell remembers Tom Lehrer?

...Bright college days, oh carefree days that fly... Since you dragged Buckethead into this already, I'll see your "bright college days" and raise you a Praxis. Bernie Worrell plays on this song. Again, for you ankle biters, Bernie Worrell was one of the original members of Parliament-Funkadelic. And at the end Buckethead shows a side you don't see much in his playing. I missed the Fatboy Slim track. But that's just me...not a much of a Rap\Hip Hop or Country fan... Here's one from my "bright and carefree" junior high school days... And if you've got 45 minutes to kill, Let me suggest a little documentary action... Happy Trails Cynicalzilla One

Dang, sg, that was a good pull out of the memory banks from 30+ years ago! Dan Hartman- now I can sleep tonight! I only knew that because we had a (locally) famous bass player who saw that getup, and had one made for him. That local person was a friend and band-mate of mine, in those days. (He's still around and active in the music scene, but I'm not.) And to tell the truth, I was only guessing that DH was the person you meant. For all I know, he could've been a copy-cat.... sumgai
