..... Some people's kids... More like: The people you have to listen to when you don't have a gun handy. For the record, I did acknowledge JFrank's contribution - what I objected to was what he was covering in the first place, that was the true caa-caa-poo-poo that started this furshlugginer mess. Yeah, and axolotl, too! And that's how judging is properly done..... whippersnapper!

And that's how judging is properly done..... whippersnapper! I bow to your current well deserved judicial status. And I agree. The original song, I believe, is the one they repeated played during interrogation to locate Osama in Abbottabad. No one can stand up to that indefinitely. My case is merely that he made something very accessible from something that bordered on painful. That takes a certain amount of talent. I have lobbied my case and come up short. So be it. ...now, where's that other Yoko link I was looking for... HTC1

Look on the bright side. At least you've got the best cover song in this thread.. ;D ;D ;D

.... I have lobbied my case and come up short. So be it. If so, then it would be due to a lack of communication somwhere along the line. I'm with you, JFrank made a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I think what's got your knickers in a twist is that I didn't +1 him for it. And I reasoned that since we don't Smite anybody here (with a certain exception), I didn't want to +1 him for his work, only to have to take it away again for kicking our collective keister by posting the source/inspiration of his work. That's all I did, really.... The man's not a genius, but he's certainly good enough to be butting up against the border of "He's real good - why ain't he on the radio?".... oh wait - he is! Radio K-Dug, that is. ;D ~!~!~!~!~!~!~ The rest of you who posted oddball crap in an overt attempt to garner the much-coveted Ban Hammer, all I can say is "sorry 'bout that, but once per thread is enough". c1 gets the Gold Star for this thread, so the rest of you might as well pack up and go home, all available Damage Points have been awarded! That is all, over and out. sumgai

OK, this thread has now officially become too weird even for my twisted tastes. Am I going to have to ask sg and Cyn1 to go to neutral corners? ;D

Well, I think this thread typifies what makes this place so different from the usual flame parlors out there. We can disagree, present opinions and arguments and gracefully agree to disagree...but I'm still not sorry about that Yoko posting...
And to bring this thread back to somewhere near it's original context, JFP, you have one of the more interesting vocals styles I've heard from an unsigned artist in a while.
And sg ought to give you a +1 just for listening to that song long enough to figure out the changes...I must be honest, I never made it all the way through it...or the second one you posted, either...
So to sum it all up, I would say we've all learned something from all of this...don't post Violent Femmes or Yoko videos if you know what's good for you...

Now it seems like c1 and I are ganging up on newey, bein' as how we're bein' buddy-buddy and all. ;D OK, a +1 to JFP for sitting through that dreck. But ya know...... For all I know, and I hate to say it, because my legion of fan is gonna be unhappy to learn this, but I don't know it all. Meaning, that was my first exposure to the V.F.. While i shudder to think of doing it again, I suppose that for the sake of good science I could "man up" and take one for the Gipper, if it meant confirming my opinion, or forcing me to re-think it. Y.O. OTOH..... I have seen/heard/experienced many such 'representations' that she is making music, and at no time has my hand ever paused on its way to the Smite button. In this instance, I'd say that history has proven itself out, and that the chances of Ono becoming capable of actually performing music instead of imitating a cat-fight are as close to Nil as humanly possible. There is a chance, mind you, but it's so small that even Jimmy The Greek won't take odds on it! All is well in The NutzHouse! ;D sumgai

I really dig having got a bunch of old farts to listen to a little Femmes. I really really dig that there are farts older than me ;D Oh, I forgot to mention, the bass on their first couple albums is accoustic, sumgai, hence the unusual tone. Speaking of Femmes covers, here are the Femmes covering that great old T-Rex chestnut: Ok, ok, my next song post will be an original. I've had it in the can, but wanted to make a different kind of video for it. I'll get to work.

See! The vocals on that one (CotR) were much better. I'd stand up and swear that the singers on the two songs aren't the same person. But perhaps there some "lessons" involved between those releases.... And as for the tone of the bass, that was never a question or an issue. At least not for me. sumgai

See! The vocals on that one (CotR) were much better. I'd stand up and swear that the singers on the two songs aren't the same person... ...or perhaps the label told him to just pick a key and stay with it... Old farts, huh...well, now there's gratitude... So, let an old fart try and turn you little pods onto something. For JFP, he was about a year old when this came out, some of the other old farts might recall this...and some of you weren't even a glint... This is from the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. Coming a year after Woodstock, it was bigger and passed the estimated Woodstock attendance by 100,000 to 200,000 people, depending on which estimate you use. This came right after Bitches Brew, which is something all of you ankle biters should check out, if nothing else, for the history lesson it should teach you. This line up was different then Bitches Brew. Miles had: Chick Corea - Fender Rhodes Keith Jarrett - Organ Gary Bartz - Sax Dave Holland - Bass Guitar Jack DeJohnette - Drums Airto Moreira - Percussion Some names you might have heard of at the Isle of Wight Festival were Rory Gallagher with Taste, Procol Harum, Joni Mitchell, Ten Years After, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, The Doors, The Who, Sly & the Family Stone, Yew's favorite Free, The Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Richie Havens and a very new Supertramp...just to name a few... If you want to hear more just 'Tube "A Different Kind of Blue" and you can catch the whole set, and most of the documentary about Miles at the Festival. This concludes your lesson for the day, kids. Please push your chairs in and no running in the halls. Happy Trails Cynical One

whoa. that was pretty awesome. Although, having been a trumpet player in my school days, I can tell you that Miles' posture is completely wrong Mr. Love would have crap a brick, but he was more of a JP Souza kinda guy.

If "Mr Love" wasn't a horn player in a '70s funk combo, he should have been. . .

Another, possibly more accessible album was the soundtrack from The Hot Spot. Here's one of the more haunting tunes:
John Lee Hooker, Miles Davis, Taj Mahal, Roy Rogers, Tim Drummond, Earl Palmer and Bradford Ellis.
This is one of those albums you save before the silverware when the waters rise... Most of the album is on the 'Tube, but if you can find it I highly recommend it.

JFrank, ...I can tell you that Miles' posture is completely wrong Mr. Love would have st a brick... Mr. Love, or perhaps it's you, has made the classic mistake of seeing a photo of a trumpet player in one position, and immediately jumping to the conclusion that said player is actually performing at that moment. Really, one has to ask - why couldn't this be a snapshot of a man in repose, contemplating what to play next? Particularly given that this is Miles "Gawd" Davis we're talking about here, a player known for resting more than blowing. His most famous saying, and my personal motto, was "Play the rests, not the notes". Well, who said that the man has to maintain the proper position as he does that 'rest playing'? Hey, don't look at me, I don't crap through tail feathers! sumgai

Telling Miles Davis his posture is all wrong sounds like something akin to telling Hendrix that hooking his thumb over the neck is all wrong... I went to a Flamenco 'workshop' as a spectating audiencemember with Juan Martín a couple years ago. The guy infront of me put his thumb over his neck. Juan shot out at him, "Who do you think you are, Eric Clapton?!" And I was told for years my piano-playing posture was all wrong. That majorly contributed to me quitting lessons. It's good enough for Franz Liszt but not good enough for me... and what do you mean you're turning up to the orchestra in a tee-shirt? On the topic of retrospectively-mindblowing concerts, my father and his mate turned up to a Black Sabbath gig at a nearby City Hall in the seventies. After a couple pints beforehand, they walked into the lobby and the hall doors were vibrating off the hinges - "[Curses], we're late, Sabbath have already started..." It turns out they were bang on time and it was a then-unknown Van Halen supporting the tour. And Van Halen do some great covers, but Cyn's pointed this out before. Here's something fresher to stay in vein with this thread: And it's not particularly different from the original, but come on, it's Elliott Smith...

When I think of the more covered artists that are still active Tom Waits comes to mind immediately. Generally whoever covers his songs makes a lot more money at it then Tom...but it's still a check in his pocket.
Rod Stewart covered this one:
Bruce Springsteen covered this one:
Los Lobos and Joe Bonamassa covered this one:
Dion covered this one:
Meat Loaf covered this one:
Elvis Costello covered this one:
Bob Seger covered this one:
The Eagles, Richie Havens and Sara McLachlan covered this one:
Bette Midler covered this one:
The band that started all this drama in this thread, Violent Femmes, covered this one:
Marianne Faithful covered this one:
Tori Amos and T-Bone Burnett covered this one:
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss covered this one:
...and these are covered by artists you might know...and probably covers you've heard before. The list is even longer then this in total if you include the smaller names and more obscure acts..
Sorry if this one got long, but Tom Waits is one of my all time favorite songwriters. You either love him or hate him...

The range of musical tastes here is always a surprise to me. I thought I was going out on a limb with Steve Goodman and now C1 brings up Tom Waits. For those who have not found it already, Folk Alley, Plays a great mix of singer songwriters, Tom Waits and Steve Goodman among them. Here is one of my favorite performers, Chris Smither: I know it's a beer can holder, sorry about that Cheers Wirey

Rather then start another thread, this one seems to have become a repository of covers...so I thought I'd share this one.
This is from a NAMM show about a dozen years ago. It's Bunny Brunel, Frank Gambale and Robbin DiMaggio covering Little Wing.
Like the tangents they go off on or not, it is an interesting take on a song you've all heard covered to death.
