Check out this article from New Scientist on conducting magnetic fields over a distance: Where's the pickup?Obviously I've idealized the report, by quite a bit. But it doesn't take much imagination to see where we could finally have a pup that senses "at just this right point" along the string, without swamping a comparatively large area (length) of that string with a broad magnetic field. ChrisK used to call that effect "robbing the string's energy", and thus adversely affecting one's tone. While I didn't totally agree with him, I'm sure that this particular upcoming technology will finally vindicate his position on the topic. Remember, you're reading it here first: I predict that before I pass on, there will be a viable revolution in how guitars pickups are made, how they are mounted within a guitar, and how the resultant sounds will be interpreted by the listener. The "old farts" (old school, old guard, etc.) people will become the Luddites of the guitar world, and in the world of making music in general... you mark my words. That is all (for now). sumgai

Or, will we first get to the point where we can just "think the riff", as well as thinking of the amp, cab, pickup settings, etc., that we desire, and the mentally-modeled sound will come out of a speaker . . .

.... will we first get to the point where we can just "think the riff", as well as thinking of the amp, cab, pickup settings, etc., that we desire, and the mentally-modeled sound will come out of a speaker . . . No, not out of the speaker anyways. More likely, if we can sense, we can transmit, therefore we'll just "think" our full-fledged concert directly into the minds of others. Chaos will immediately ensue; Ma Bell will come out with "an app for that" which will promise to bring order out of chaos. Instead of "old school" enabling of long distance communications (beyond shouting range), it will prevent anyone from communicating/thinking at you, except those you permit. Not long after that, a war will erupt between spammers defending their right to free speech, thinking they can extend speech to mean thoughts; and individuals who fight for privacy rights. Whereupon the term "spam" will take on a whole new meaning. Ever hear of a "blivet"? If I were a Buddhist, I'd think that the Wheel has just taken another turn. sumgai

I forsee thst one small 'speed bump' on the road to super-conducting magnetic pipe guitar pickups will be the extra body routing required to accomodate the liquid nitrogen tanks needed for cryogenic super-cooling.
I'm quite busy this week but I'll try to post a solution by next weekend.

J Thanks John, also I've only got a three-way rotary switch so can we use that instead of the superswitch please thanks

Heh, then Fender can finally get that original Marauder design to work

Heh... Spot on there, though I think the Gai has a couple years on me. I was a toddler when the original Marauder was NOT released... The Gai was in school methinks.

Trust g-f-b to make a mess of things! ;D True, I have a decade and some on ux, and I was just about to graduate HS when the latest catalog proofs came in to my workplace, that most revered of all music stores on the West Coast known as Joos Music in Lynnwood WA. (The very same place where The Ventures got their gear!) I was a simple amp tech back then, learning about the professional music scene from the viewpoint of down in the trenches. I remember us all scratching our collective heads and wondering how Leo was gonna make that happen. Guitar construction is going to get more than a little strange in the foreseeable future. Hell, I'm having trouble imagining what Leo would've done with this kind of thing, had it been around in 1960. Note to John: Super conductors of electricity need cooling because when electrons move through a conductor, they convert some of their kinetic energy into thermal energy (IOW, electron motion isn't 100% efficient, there's some waste by-product we know as heat). In a magnetic field, insofar as I know, there is no such waste, eddy currents around an iron core notwithstanding. I don't think an LHC-sized cooler is gonna be needed here. History-spouting sumgai
