I really don't understand the problem some people have with immigration (especially asylum seekers), but since you are - presumably - an Australian Aboriginal, and given the terrible history and suffering of your ancestors and the continued prejudice Aboriginals still suffer today due to immigrants, it would be unsympathetic of me to not have some understanding of your plight and opinion, even if I do not agree with the underlying premise (asylum/immigration: bad). I wish you, your nation, and the world, better understanding.

Lol, I think Gummy is referring to the strange state of australian politics and leadership (or lack there of) in Australain politics at the moment... Not sure that we are such a 'soft touch' and Australia is one of the heardest countries to get to, especially by boat. Most likely drown at sea without trace. Most 'illegals' come by plane and running from the UK and ireland ;-) ... Amd it's always been that way though and often pushed by the political mechanations of other countries. The vietnamese from the fall out after the war, similarly the more recent from the middle east. My new GF came here in the 70's as a political refugee from Peru. You know, everyone is running from somewhere to be here, from the convicts to the most common english visa overstayers which makes up by far the majority of people 'sneaking in' ;-)

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard loses the leadership of the Labor Party to the man she ousted in 2010, Kevin Rudd, by 57 votes to 45.

LOL...I missed that before as it was some rediculous hour...yes, we have a new priminister, again, without anyone asking me, again!
This will seem odd to americans and others that this can happen and overnight, it's the same as changing presidents...but never mind, Kevin Rudd was PM before Julia and these days, what really is the difference. As long as it isn't Tony Abbot, why don't they change too, make it more interesting...he's already asking when the election is going to be, I thought it was already set for Novemeber, he's a bit keen to have the job it seems too!

No...I don't actually have a problem with asylum seekers at all, BTW.. ...so maybe that line was written in haste without realising how it may have been taken by others..my apologies! ..and yes, I was referring to the fact that we had just watched the Prime Ministership change again...it's funny stuff, Oz politics! I feel that the Rest of the World must watch some of this stuff and just wonder WTF is going on... THAT WAS MY POINT. I think most people Down Here really wish that the whole lot would get their respective acts together and just start looking after the country instead of interminable bickering, abuse and back-stabbing.. ...sigh! Perhaps we'll all be better benefitted by leaving this thread to die quietly... through lack of interest, rather than start another fire here on these pages.. Sorry if I inadvertently upset anyone along the way.. g-f-b

I feel that the Rest of the World must watch some of this stuff and just wonder WTF is going on... We get a lot of that here, too. Again, we get a lot of that here, too. Look on the bright side, at least you can make a change overnight. Immigration is a big issue here, too. Seems the biggest problem people have with immigration is regarding the immigrants that arrive after they do... HTC1

Well, in Chicago, it's "f k you, I got here first..." Coming from neighborhoods in Chicago that have been full of first generation immigrants on and off my entire life, I've never seen or experienced that against anyone who comes here and works like everyone else and is not looking for handouts. No, not everyone is legal, but that's a whole other discussion.

Can't say I really understand what you meant by your comment, but I'll take your word for it. Maybe I would need to be an Australian to 'get it'. Reviewing my post, I see that I wrote "historic history" (now edited). So, I had a brain fart too.
