While David Bowie may not have been known for his personal guitar prowess, he certainly had no small amount of effect on how guitarists searched for their own uniquely identifiable tone. For this, David was a master, constantly coming out with new recordings that featured yet another way to sound different. I think it's safe to say that he will be missed by very nearly all musicians, not just the popsters.

Yeah, I was saddened to hear that this morning. He apparently kept the diagnosis a closely-guarded secret-and planned the release of his final album as a posthumous gift to the fans.
One should also mention Bowie's work behind the mixing board, having produced Lou Reed, Iggy Pop and others.

It's damn short list of those artists\musicians who can lay claim to being a genre in their own right.
It's another equally short list of those still in the business after 50+ years that haven't become a nostalgia act.
You won't see many like him.
Via con dios, Mr. Jones.

Moonage day dream is one of my favorites, BTW, he had the same age as Lemmy who passed away half a month ago. RIP to both.

Personally, I thought he was sort of a Renaissance man, he was so artistically gifted. He certainly could've made a pile more moolah as an actor, but chose not to be tied down to any one medium. For my money, he brought a whole new meaning to the term "musical", specifically as in movies, with his no-one-else-could-do-this performance in Labyrinth.

Despite not being renowned as a guitarist, I read that David Bowie elected to play guitar himself on his Diamond Dogs album to get a more raw style for the music (although I always loved Ronson's playing as well).
David's playing on Diamond Dogs remains some of my favourite guitar playing on any record for that reason, and very well suited to the dystopian mood of the album.
I felt like Bowie's death was the loss of an old, personal friend, and I miss him very much.
